Dr. J. Vernon McGee

Psalms 3, 4

August 7, 2023

Lessons learned from Psalms 3—4 include: God will forgive any believer who comes to Him in repentance. If you fear God you have no man to fear. As a shield, God covers those who are His. We can cry out to God in our distresses, and He will answer. Even in trouble we can know God’s peace.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Lessons learned from Psalm 2 include: The Ten Commandments are the cords—man is wanting to be free of them. God is accomplishing His purpose—to bring people to His name. Nothing can change or stop God’s plan.

Lessons learned from Psalm 1 include: The delight of God’s man is in the law of the Lord. We are to meditate on God’s Word and allow it to shape our lives and make us grow. God plants us as trees and causes us to grow through His Word and produce fruit. The primary business of a Christian is not soul winning but getting out the Word of God.

Lessons learned from the Psalms include: We are to walk by faith and not listen to the counsel of the ungodly. Christ was a happy man, but He carried our sorrows. If we walk with the ungodly counselor we will soon stand with sinners and then progress to sitting with the scorners or atheists. The ungodly leave God out of their lives.

What should we boast about? Some in the first century boasted in their accomplishments and skills. Others boasted in their commitment to religious practices. Paul said we should boast only in Jesus Christ and His cross. This final study in Galatians takes us back to basics: It’s not about what we do for God, but what He has done for us.

We’ve all heard about sowing and reaping. The Bible talks about it in two ways: By the flesh and by the Spirit. Sow to the flesh and the results are disastrous. Sow to the Spirit and you’re giving the Spirit of God opportunity to build into your spirit and character fruit that will last for eternity. Learn lessons for a lifetime of growing in grace from Galatians 6.

The Bible has a lot to say about pride—and none of it is good. In our study of Galatians 6, we learn that without Jesus, we can do nothing. Don’t believe your heart in thinking we can live the Christian life on our own. We need the Lord, we need each other, and we need His Spirit to teach us His Word.

What does it mean to “walk with the Lord”? Dr. J. Vernon McGee assures us that learning to walk with God’s Spirit is partly trial and error. We start out looking to Jesus and things are fine. Then something comes along to upset us, and we take our eyes off our Savior. Discover how to stay in step with the Savior in this study.

When we are saved by faith through grace, we are new creations—who still have an old nature in the flesh. We feel this tug of war our whole Christian life. But as we grow, the Spirit of God cultivates His character in us, helping us overcome our natural tendencies to sin. If you want more of God’s fruit in your life, join us in Galatians 5.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. J. Vernon McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
