Psalms 13—15

August 14, 2023

Lessons learned from Psalm 13—15 include: Only a madman would say there is no God. A righteous person will go on record for the truth and will not change his story to protect himself. We should show our faith by our works.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Lessons learned in Psalms 10:4—12:8 include: In our testing we can only turn to God. God hates the wicked who hold on to their wickedness. Sometimes God allows hard things into our lives so they will achieve a good purpose.

Lessons learned from Psalms 9—11:1 include: Praise is in anticipation of the coming victory when all things will be put under Christ’s feet. God makes the rules for this universe, and He is running it. Mercy is extended to us in the person of Jesus Christ.

Lessons learned from Psalm 8 include: The Lord is the Creator. God put the stars in their places. The heavens are the work of His fingers and tell out His glory and power. Man was important enough for Christ to come and die on the cross. Someday the name of the Lord will be excellent in all the earth.

Lessons learned from Psalms 5—7 include: Morning is a good time to lift your heart to God in prayer. Prayer is the resource and recourse when we look at the wickedness all around us. Regardless of what we are suffering, He has already been through it. God will hear and answer our prayer when we are in deep trouble. We don’t understand innocent suffering, but someday God will explain it.

Lessons learned from Psalms 3—4 include: God will forgive any believer who comes to Him in repentance. If you fear God you have no man to fear. As a shield, God covers those who are His. We can cry out to God in our distresses, and He will answer. Even in trouble we can know God’s peace.

Lessons learned from Psalm 2 include: The Ten Commandments are the cords—man is wanting to be free of them. God is accomplishing His purpose—to bring people to His name. Nothing can change or stop God’s plan.

Lessons learned from Psalm 1 include: The delight of God’s man is in the law of the Lord. We are to meditate on God’s Word and allow it to shape our lives and make us grow. God plants us as trees and causes us to grow through His Word and produce fruit. The primary business of a Christian is not soul winning but getting out the Word of God.

Lessons learned from the Psalms include: We are to walk by faith and not listen to the counsel of the ungodly. Christ was a happy man, but He carried our sorrows. If we walk with the ungodly counselor we will soon stand with sinners and then progress to sitting with the scorners or atheists. The ungodly leave God out of their lives.

What should we boast about? Some in the first century boasted in their accomplishments and skills. Others boasted in their commitment to religious practices. Paul said we should boast only in Jesus Christ and His cross. This final study in Galatians takes us back to basics: It’s not about what we do for God, but what He has done for us.

We’ve all heard about sowing and reaping. The Bible talks about it in two ways: By the flesh and by the Spirit. Sow to the flesh and the results are disastrous. Sow to the Spirit and you’re giving the Spirit of God opportunity to build into your spirit and character fruit that will last for eternity. Learn lessons for a lifetime of growing in grace from Galatians 6.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. J. Vernon McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
