Galatians 4:9-31

July 21, 2023

The Lord Jesus summed up the Law by saying we should love God with all our heart, soul and mind and our neighbor as ourselves. Demonstrating the love and mercy of God is the goal. Our study of Galatians 4 will help us both understand and put that in practice.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

We think we are free men and women, but our study in Galatians 4 asks us to consider if we are slaves to sin or idols or legalism. When we return to our former ways, we put our faith in our actions, not in Jesus’ work on the cross for us. “Live free,” Galatians says.

How old are you in the Lord? No matter if you are a new Christian or a seasoned one, the Spirit of God is able to teach you. No longer servants, Galatians 4 calls all of us children of God, sons, and “heirs of God, through Christ,” bonded to Him in love.

“Help me understand the Law,” you may ask. Dr. J. Vernon McGee compared it to a mirror. The mirror of the Law shows us that we’re dirty but can’t help us clean up. For that, we need the washing of the Word.

What good is the Old Testament Law? Answer: It was wonderful, but it had its limits. It could only reveal sin, not remove it. It showed us our true character before a holy God and our desperate need for mercy. When we are offered new life in Christ by grace through faith, we are born from above to a new life that the Law could never give.

The answer can only be yes or no. Is Jesus your savior? Are you in Christ? Do you have God’s Spirit as His seal on your life? All of these are asking the same question—one that is answered in our study of Galatians 3 with Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Wait! Don’t go back to your old way of life, no matter how “religious” it was. That’s the warning Paul gave to the Galatians and anyone who wants to know what being “religious” looks like. Following religious rules doesn’t matter—God only looks at your heart.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. J. Vernon McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
