You need a Helper

January 11, 2023

So this man Elijah now needed rest, and God knew that. And the Lord put him to sleep. And then he needed some good food. And now there was there bread that was being cooked. You know who I think cooked that? The same One that prepared that breakfast on the shore of Galilee that morning after the resurrection. That’s the One! Then He told him, “The journey is too great for you.”  My friend, I don’t know who you are today listening in,  you may think you’re sufficient for the battle of life. But I want to say this to you—the journey’s too great for you through life! You’re going to need a Savior. You’re going to need a Helper. Even this man, Elijah, as rugged as he was, did that.

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

I trust that as you go along you can see the hand of God in the life of this man, Paul.  And the same One that moved in the life of Paul wants to move in your life and my life today.  That’s the glory and wonder of it all, friends. Many of us today we have a very simple routine of life, and yet God is concerned and interested in us, and God wants to give us that leading and guiding that you and I need today in the complexities that face us in our contemporary culture.  And believe me we need those today, there's no question that we need God today on the scene.

Listen to Him. "…If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink." Are you weary of the ways of this world? Are you tired of them? "The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely." Are you thirsty? He’s thirsty for you if you are thirsty for Him. He died for you. He longs for you. My friend, today, He offers you the water of life. If you’re thirsty, He says, "…come and drink, without money without price." He paid it all. He says, "Come and drink.”

And I just have the notion that, since God gave 66 books, that He meant that we’re to study all 66 of them. They teach John, they teach Romans, and oh my, they’ll get to Revelation, I guarantee you that. But what about the other 63 books that are in the Bible? Why don’t we study them? Because, my friend, if you’re going to build yourself up in your most holy faith, you must have the total Word of God. You can’t build a house without a foundation.  You need all 66 book of the Bible if you’re going to build yourself up in your most holy faith.

A sheep is helpless unless it has a good shepherd. And if a sheep can say, "I’m safe and I know that I’m safe," the sheep's boasting, "I’ve got a good shepherd. I’ve got a wonderful shepherd." He says that He can keep you. Now it’s not a question whether I can hold on; it’s a question of whether He can hold on. And He says He can. And it’s a matter of trusting Him. You see, assurance of salvation rests upon the Word of God and it’s a question of whether you believe Him, whether you trust Him or not. It all rests upon that because He’s made it very clear that you have a sure salvation.

You can come. There’s a mercy seat for you. And if you have come to God today and are His child, you’ve come to that mercy seat where He died yonder on the cross for your sins and my sins. The penalty has been paid. A Holy God is able to hold His arms outstretched. And you don’t have to beg Him. You don’t have to join something. You don’t even have to be somebody. You can come and trust Him. And He’ll save you. He is merciful. If you and I today knew how good He was, it’d break our hearts. We couldn’t stand it. He’s so good to us.

Let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. Why don't you believe God today, friend? And I'm talking to you as a Christian friend. Do you have a long face today? Are you wondering how this is going to work out and that's going to work out? I know exactly how you feel—I've been there. May I say to you, why don't you believe God? Why don't you trust Him and turn them over to Him? Do you lack wisdom? Believe me, I know this: I do not have the brains to meet the problems of life; I'm not capable today of actually living in this complex civilization. But I've got a heavenly Father, friends, and He can supply even the wisdom that I need and that you need.

Let us come boldly. And do you need help today?  Well, is life monotonous? Is it stale, flat, and unprofitable? Well, go to the Lord Jesus.  He’s up there for you. Are you lonely?  Go to Him. Is life a battle and you’re losing it? Go to Him.  Is life a struggle against temptation and you can’t overcome?  Go to Him. Is life a horrible mistake, you lack wisdom at the crossroads of life? Go to Him. Is life shrouded with sorrow for you today, friend?  Go to Him.  He is our great High Priest by His resurrection from the dead.  He’s living; He’s up there for us today.  And oh, how we need Him.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
