Will God forgive me?

April 18, 2023

“O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth forever.” Now this is a psalm that exalts the mercy of God. God is rich in mercy, Paul said. I want mercy from God, and God is rich in it. Have you called on Him? There are folks that have hang-ups. We get letters, “I have done this sin. Do you think God will forgive me?” Friends, He’s rich in mercy. Do you want forgiveness? Do you really want it, well, He’ll give it to you.  Oh, my friend, learn to fall down before Him and worship Him. He’s worthy.

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

He’s everything you need. I wish I could get that over to you. He’s been made to us wisdom and He’s our righteousness, He's our sanctification and our redemption. And whatever you need, you find it in Him today. What are you boasting of today? Are you boasting of your degrees? Your wisdom? Are you boasting today of your wealth? Your power? Are you boasting of your position? Your character? My friend, you have nothing to boast of. And believe me, I know I haven’t. But we can boast of Christ. And He’s everything. He’s everything that we need today. Oh, that you and I might see that.

“Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places. He causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries.” It’s God that makes the weather. The weatherman doesn’t make the weather. Not only did He create it, not only does He make the weather, but friends, He’s running this universe as it pleases Him. God doesn’t have to answer you or me today. He asks us to trust Him, and it should be a life of faith.

“Praise ye the Lord. Praise ye the name of the Lord; praise him, O ye servants of the Lord. Ye who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. Praise the Lord; for the Lord is good: sing praises unto his name; for it is pleasant.” You know, we’re not saying it enough today that God is good. Have you ever told anybody that God is good? Oh, I want to get on this radio and just say one thing: God is good, and let it go at that. Because that’s wonderful. Our God is good, and this is a call to praise Him.

The problem—the great problem today is that a great many are trying to follow a few little rules and regulations. And again, let me say it, they’re programmed like an IBM computer. And they feel like if they run through all those little things and do them, everything will work out. My friend, you’re a human being. If you’re a child of God, you’ve got a new nature. And you've still got that old nature. But as Paul says, “I know within my flesh dwelleth no good thing.” But Paul says, “I want to do His will.” Is that the thing that’s in your heart and life?

And I hear a great deal today about the word “commitment.” Do you want to commit your life to Christ? What do you mean by that? I hear that so much today. Well, let me tell you what it means here. Full commitment is to love Christ. And if you love Christ, He says that you’re going to keep His Word. You can’t help it. You want to please the person that you love. You don’t like to offend the person that you love; you want to please them. Now the question is not, “Are you committed?” but “Do you love Christ?” That’s the important thing today. Do you love Christ?

Now, the child of God wants to obey not only the commandments, but he wants to obey the Word of God. That is, he wants to please the Father in everything that he does. I get the impression from some Christians, the way they talk is this: "Well, how far can I go in my conduct and still be a Christian?" I never would answer them, because they’re asking the wrong question. What is the right question to ask? The right question is, “What can I do to please my heavenly Father? What can I do to please Christ?” You see, a child of God wants to please Him.

But my friend, there’s another face. That’s the face of Jesus Christ. And if we just behold Him. Oh, my friend, in this hour may I say this to you? I’m talking to many of you that are alone right now and we can just talk about this. Oh today, the thing that you and I need is to behold His face. It's to draw close to Jesus Christ. That’ll change you. Oh there’s so many of us so wrapped up in methods and activity and action, we’re just so busy. And we haven’t looked at Him recently. Let’s take a little time and look at Him.

Fellowship, you see—we’re in a family. That’s the thing that’s important today. I don’t care about these little rules that you’re following and you think that somehow or another that you are going to live the Christian life like that. My friend, God doesn’t want you to be a programmed computer. He’s not trying to make that out of you. You’re a human being with your own free will, but you’re a member of His family, and He wants to have fellowship with you. And I think we can talk to Him as we talk to no one else. If we are to have fellowship with the Father and enjoy it and have an assurance in our own heart, we must keep His commandments. Don’t say that we’re free do as we please.  A Christian doesn’t do as he pleases; he does as Christ pleases.

The sincere child of God wants to please the Father. And he walks along with that in mind, as the Psalmist expressed it in Psalm 139:23, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts.” And every child of God wants, therefore, to please the Father. And thank God we have propitiation. Now that means Christ is really our mercy seat. He is the One. Friends, you see, Christianity today is not a ritual, it’s not a ceremony, it’s not a system, and it’s not even the church. Christianity is a Person, and that Person is Christ. He is our mercy seat. Now He’s a mercy seat for the whole world.

Now fellowship for a believer means that we meet and share the things of Christ. In fact, this Bible study we have together here each day, I trust is a fellowship with many of you. As we talk about the Lord Jesus and about His Word, we trust that you enter into it and that it becomes meaningful to you, and that you and I share the things of Christ. We can have fellowship one with another when we share the things of Christ and we can have fellowship with Him. And I think right now He’s listening in to us and that He’s watching you and me both. And He’s saying, “McGee, why don’t you do a better job than you’re doing?" I wish I could present Him in a more wonderful way because, friends, that’s one of His names. He’s wonderful.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
