We're the same family

January 27, 2023

God is rich today in mercy we’re told. Have you received mercy from the hand of God yet? It’s there for you. This is just part of the message that we find here in these first, actually, eight chapters of First Chronicles. It’s a genealogy. It’s the family of Adam. You and I are in it. We all belong to the same race. We’re all fallen. We’re all on equality. We’re all born equal in this sense: All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. And salvation is for mankind. What a glorious thing this genealogy is here. It’s the global genealogy.

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

And I’m glad the Lord loved David and that the Lord dealt with David as He did because David was so human. And I don’t know about you, but Vernon McGee is very human, and I found out God will deal with him, too, just as graciously and just as good. The Lord is good. The Lord is wonderful. Oh, that we give praise to God. I can’t build Him a temple, but, my friend, today we can offer the temple of the Holy Spirit these bodies of ours to Him. Now He doesn’t get very much; that is, when He gets me. But He’s got me. My friend, today, oh, what joy to be committed to Him.

I look back on my life and I think, “Oh, how good He’s been!" He’s merciful today toward an unsaved world. Why didn’t last night—why didn’t judgment come? Because God is merciful. He’s coming someday, but He’s longsuffering. He’s merciful. And He’s merciful to us. He pities His children; He looks upon us. And then, my friend, may I say to you there’s mercies of God for the future. God will never cease to be merciful. It’s not a happy disposition. With Him, it’s not a development of character. God is merciful. And David casts himself on the mercy of God.

You know God holds out salvation to a lost world, and on what basis? Why, He is the mercy seat. You remember John says in 1 John 2:2, "He is the propitiation for our sins, and not  for our sins only, but for the sins of the whole world." What is propitiation? The mercy seat. He has an abundance of mercy. And all you have to do if you want to be saved, friend, go into court with God, plead guilty, and then ask for mercy. He’s got plenty of it. That’s the way He’ll save you. There’s a pardon for you. You must claim it.

That’s all God is asking you to do today—by faith to take Jesus Christ. And He lifts you from the bottom, where there’s no purpose and meaning, and brings you to the light of God’s high and holy purpose for your life. Are you geared in today to Christ? Are you in that handle today that makes you useful, gives you a purpose, desire, and a direction? By simple faith “he reached out his hand and took it.”

Oh, today is there direction to your life? Are you today far from God? Oh, the greatest miracle today, my beloved, is not to go to the moon. If you this morning could go through space at the speed of light for the next million years and come to the highest heaven, you’d still have your sin upon you and you’d still be a sinner. You’d still be at the bottom of the Jordan River, far from God and lost to Him. What we need today, and what you need and what I need is to be lifted from the muck and the mire of sin and come to Christ who can give meaning to life.

My beloved, this is one of the most wonderful incidents in the Word of God. It shows that the Lord is interested in the small events in our lives. You remember Paul said to us, “Pray about everything.” Someone asked Dr. G. Campbell Morgan years ago,  “Do you think, Dr. Morgan, we ought pray about the little things in our lives?” And Dr. Morgan gave that famous answer, “Can you mention anything in your life that’s big to God?" It’s all little as far as He’s concerned, and we’re to pray about everything.  There is not a detail in the Christian’s life that should not be brought to God in prayer. We’re to pray about everything.

"The sheep hear His voice and He calleth His own sheep by name and leadeth them out," and I love that. I believe when the Lord Jesus calls His own out of the world at the time of the Rapture, the dead in Christ will be raised and also the living will be caught up to meet Him.  I believe that that “shout” will have in it every man’s name.  I think I’ll hear Him say personally, “Vernon”—Vernon McGee.”  That will be wonderful.  He knows my name, you see, and He’ll call me at that time, and He’ll call you.  And you’ll hear your name.  I believe that we’ll hear His voice.

What about it today? What does the cross mean to you? An offense? It brings out in you that rebellion? “I don’t like it. I want my own religion.” You’ve been attempting to go your way. Maybe you’ve never interpreted it as a rebellion, but you haven’t been willing to come God’s way. The cross has seemed rather foolish to you. God says it is. It has to be foolish to the natural man because it’s contrary to his way of thinking. He’s in rebellion against God. Are you willing to bring your thinking in line with God’s today? Are you willing to bow to Him? Are you willing to acknowledge Jesus Christ as your Savior? Yield to Him?

And, oh, if you think David loved Absalom, that's nothing compared to God’s love for you. He says, “Don’t hurt him.” You can go on in sin and away from God. He’ll love you. He says, “Don’t touch him. Don’t hurt him.” I want to say to you—I want to bring him back. David because of his sin could not save his son. It broke his heart. God gave His Son, and it broke His heart that He might save you! And He’s been saving multitudes. God says, "Your call. If you can see in this cross My wisdom, My power, you’ll have to leave your rebellion and come over on My side.”

God says, “The Jews seeketh after a sign; the Greeks seek after wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified.” Why? Listen to me carefully. When you come to Him, you have to give up your rebellion. No longer the mind, no longer looking for something big that appeals to you. But you come God’s way. You accept His way. Who are the called? They are the ones that put down their rebellion. And they said, “I no longer trust myself, and I no longer go my way. I’ll go God’s way.” And they have found in the cross, the power and the wisdom of God.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
