Thirsty for the Word

October 13, 2023

“Yea, if thou criest after knowledge”—notice this, Peter puts it like this—“as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word.” Have you ever seen a little baby when Mama is fixing the bottle? The little fellow’s lying on his back and he’s wiggling everything he’s got. Hands are going and, believe me, the mouth is going, the feet are going. I tell you, he desires the milk bottle. And the child of God should be that way as far as the Word of God is concerned.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Now there are a great many people are going to say that, after all, you have to be a very intelligent person, you must have a very high IQ, in order to understand the Word of God. But friends, nothing is farther from the truth than that. God does not say that that’s the thing that is essential at all. But He does make it clear now in the second chapter, as this young man starts out, that if he is to know the will and Word of God, it’s going to mean that he’ll have to study. He must “apply his heart unto wisdom.” And, therefore, he must study the Word of God.

“To understand a proverb and the interpretation, the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.” In other words, God has put these great truths here. And I would say the tragedy of the hour is the ignorance of the Word of God that’s in both the pulpit and the pew. There needs to be a serious, concentrated study of the Word of God. This idea that you can read over a passage once and you’ve gotten it all—I trust that we’ve seen one thing in this study, that you just don’t get it, friends, without study.

“It’s the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.” Now God has given the gospel so clear to be declared from the housetops, but a great deal of the truth that’s in the Word of God is not put on the surface like diamonds that would be scattered on the ground. He’s always put the jewels and that which is valuable, He’s always hid it away for man to find—for man to look for it. The gold has to be dug out of the ground and the diamonds must be taken out of the ground. Now, friends, if you haven’t found Christ in the Bible, you just haven’t been mining for diamonds. You haven’t been digging deep enough.

“A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsel.” A wise man will hear—that’s been the characteristic of all great men, has been that they never reach the place where they felt like they had learned everything. I listened the other night to a young man on television. He’s skyrocketed to fame in rock music, and the thing that characterized him was his arrogance. He knows it all. I don’t think you could tell that young man anything. But a wise man will hear.

We’re told in First Corinthians, the very first chapter, in verse 30, “But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.” And wisdom is number one. Christ is the wisdom for the believer today. And we’d need to know wisdom, and to know wisdom is to know Jesus Christ. Paul said that was the ambition, “that I might know Him ….” That was the ambition of the life of Paul the apostle. Oh, that that might be the thing that would grip your soul and my soul today. Oh, how we need it. I need it. You need it, I’m sure.

Paul makes it very clear in the third chapter of Romans. He presents Christ as the propitiation, the mercy seat for our sins. And then he says “for the sins that are past.” And that doesn't mean our sins that are past, it means the sins before the Cross. When God saved Abraham, God saved Abraham on credit. That offering Abraham brought didn’t save him. It pointed to Christ. And when Christ died on the cross, He paid for everything that was past. That's what He meant when He said “it's finished”—for those that are past and for those of us that are future. And the trouble of it is with us future is we want to add something to it. He did it all.

God is drawing certain lines. He made a line of demarcation between light and darkness. There are no gray areas as far as God is concerned. It's either right or it's wrong. We today are living in a time when the church is traveling on “the high C's” today: confusion and compromise and comfort. And compromise is the big thing of the hour. God drew the line, and He's on that line of demarcation. He said, “One side is light, the other side is dark. One side is right, the other side is wrong.” And from that day to this, I think God's been drawing the line.

Faith is not a leap in the dark. Faith is a substance. Faith is evidence. And our salvation today doesn't rest upon make-believe. It rests upon the historical fact that Jesus Christ died for our sins, that He was buried, He rose again the third day. And there's evidence for that. Lord Lyndhurst, who was a great jurist in England, he made this statement. He says, “I think I know what evidence is, and there is more evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ than there is for any other critical historical incident in the history of the world.”

What works for one man won't work for another man. God wants to use each one of us in His own way. And that's the wonder and the glory of it is: There's nobody that can take your place in the world. And God created you to do something that you alone can do. Now, if you come along and try to imitate somebody else and don't do what God calls you to do, you see, it's going to be a vacuum at that particular point. That's how important you are. And we ought to recognize that and try to do the thing God would have us do.

When you come to Jesus Christ, you are brought not only into a body, but now you are brought into a place where you stand before God on a par with anybody. I could stand today with you and you stand today with me on equal footing. And therefore the point of separation for believers should never be color. It should never be a social status. It should never be on any basis at all because we’ve been made one in Christ. And I don’t care who you are. If you’re a believer in Christ, you and I are going to be together throughout eternity. And I don’t know why we shouldn’t speak to each other every now and then down here, friends.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
