The way out

February 2, 2024

Today there’s a way out for America. But if America goes like other nations—and we’re moving in that direction—our time is limited as a great nation, by the way. There is a way out. Philosophy says: Think your way out. Indulgence says: Drink your way out. Politics says: Spend your way out. Liberalism says: Legislate your way out. Science says: Invent your way out. Industry says: Work your way out. And Labor says: Strike your way out. And Fascism says: Bluff your way out. And Militarism says: Fight your way out. The Bible says: Pray your way out. And the Lord Jesus Christ said, “I am the way out.” That’s the only hope of America today, friend.

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

I hope you find humor in the Bible. If you do, it will make it lots more interesting for you. And God has a sense of humor. I think that when we get in eternity and get past the time of sin on this earth, get past the program that God is working out and we’re there in eternity—you know, I think we’re sure going to have a good time. We’re going to have many laughs, and it’s going to be a hilarious situation, by the way. And it doesn’t hurt as you go through today as Christians to have the right kind of humor. And God has put a lot of it in the Bible; at least I find a lot of it in the Bible.

“When our Lord cried on the cross, “It is finished” [“Tetelestai”], my friend, it’s finished as far as your redemption and mine is concerned. You and I can add nothing to that whatsoever. Your redemption and mine was completed 1900 years ago, long before we got here. And when we arrived, all that we are asked to do is to accept and receive that. And after He died upon the cross, appeared for 40 days, He ascended. He sat down at God’s right hand. And the reason He sat down was because your redemption and my redemption was completed, and there’s nothing that can be added to our salvation.

“It is not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Spirit.” Suffering is nowhere made a condition of salvation. No sacrifice or suffering on our part is essential to make up any lack in the sufferings of Christ. God offers a gift. The gift of God is eternal life. And a gift is something that you receive. And if you offer anything for it, and I don’t care how much, it ceases to be a gift, and it becomes something that you paid for. May I say to you that the gift of God is eternal life.

Now listen to this carefully. “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God; from henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified.” In other words, what He did on the cross makes the believer perfect in God’s presence. You and I are never perfect because of who we are or what we do. In God’s presence, we are made complete and perfect when we are in Christ, and God sees us in Christ. And that was the redemption that He wrought for us on the cross.

“My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies.” Christ won’t have any part of you unless He has all of you. He just won’t take any part of you. You have to be totally dedicated to Him. This business today of you serve Him on Sunday and the devil six days a week—you don’t get by with that with Him. You may be fooling the church and the neighbors and the preacher, but you won’t get by with that with Him. He has all of you or none. She says, “I am his, and he is mine.” He gave all for you and gives all today. He loves you with an everlasting love.

You have influence. You have influence in the business world. You have influence in your neighborhood. You have influence in your Sunday school. You have influence. And you have influence in your city. You have influence in your community. You have influence. Somebody is looking at you, friend. Now, they can see that going to church is to you, just like dropping by a drive-in to pick up a hamburger when there is nothing else to do. And that’s all it means to you. They know whether you mean business with God or not. Does your life suggest to your associates that there is a heaven to gain and a hell to shun? You have influence.

“The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.” The voice of the Lord Jesus will prevail. I think that’s always a tremendous thing that is said, concerning Him. He will come with a voice, a shout, a voice of the archangel, and that’s His voice. A sound of a trumpet, and His voice will be like that of a trumpet. His voice will prevail in this world today. Above the babble of voices, why, His voice will prevail.

God says, “Don’t you make a vow and then not pay it”—not to God. And then He says, “For he hath no pleasure in fools; pay that which thou hast vowed.” When you do business with God, friends, it’s real. You just can’t go to God and promise Him things and then not make good and expect to maintain a vital relationship with God. Oh, I tell you, there is a lot of pious talking today and pious promising, but it’s absolutely meaningless, because it’s never carried out. And God says if you’re going to make a vow, carry it. When you do business with God you better mean what you say, because God’s going to hold you to it.

If you’ve got religion, I suggest you get rid of it and exchange it for Christ. Now I personally do not think you can call Christianity a religion. There’s no ritual given, none whatsoever, with Christianity. Have you ever stopped to think that? That’s the reason that you can have all kinds of churches. You can sing the doxology if you want to. There’s nothing wrong with it and there’s nothing particularly right about it, either. Because you are never given a form to go by. Why? Because Christianity is a person, and you either have Christ or you don’t have Christ. You either trust Christ or you don’t trust Christ.

“I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.” It will always inflate an individual like a balloon if he feels like he’s a little smarter or better educated than those that are around him. But education has to fall back on experience and experience is something you cannot trust. It has to be tested by the Word of God. The thing today is that a great many people are testing the Word of God by their experience. My friend, you need to test your experience by the Word of God and see if it will stand up and under it.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
