The ultimate sacrifice

December 20, 2023

There was indeed a star in God’s window that first Christmas night. He had sent His Son to a foreign land as a soldier to die for the greatest cause. He was going to fight the greatest battle against the worst enemy of mankind and of God. He was to meet Satan. He was to be the victor. That star was to become a gold star, for God was giving His Son to die for a lost world. God must love us poor human beings more than we can comprehend or appreciate to make such a sacrifice for us.

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Christ was made in the likeness of men. He had little hands, little feet just like any other baby. He could have chosen Caesar’s palace as His natal place. More likely, He might have chosen the temple, which was His Father’s house. He passed them by and came to Bethlehem. He gave up the pomp of princes that He might be called the carpenter’s son. In fact, He passed by all homes and came to a stable that He might be homeless. He not only became a baby, but He became a companion of the outcast. He said, “But the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.” He came down and took our place.

Only the Word of God can bring strength to you. You have to have physical food when you are weak, and you have to have bread and meat if you are going to gain strength. And the Word of God is bread and it’s meat, my friends. And the only way you can grow spiritually is in the Word of God and as that Word reveals Jesus Christ. And I wish that I could see Him on every page of Scripture. The problem today is we need to see Him. We need to have the reality of Christ in our lives.

“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed unto the same image from glory to glory, even as by the spirit of the Lord.” Now the Word of God is the mirror, and we’re beholding in a mirror the glory of the Lord. How are you going to behold Christ? The only way in the world you can behold the living Christ is in the Word of God. And as you behold Him, why, there is a liberty that He gives to you. There is a freedom that He gives to you. There is a growth that He gives to you. And friends, you can’t come by it any other way than in the Word of God.

There are those today that say prayer changes things. Well, does prayer change things? I think so, but that’s not the primary purpose of prayer. Notice here, we entered this passage in worry and we come out in peace. What’s been changed? Have things been changed? No, nothing’s been changed. A storm is still raging. Waves are still rolling high. The thunder is still resounding and a storm has not abated. But something has happened to the individual. We enter with worry, we come out in peace. What’s really happened? I tell you what’s happened. Something’s happened to the human soul or the human mind. Prayer, my friend, does not primarily change things. It changes us. The individual was changed here. That is the secret of power today—prayer.

“Let your moderation be known unto all men.” Matthew Arnold translated that, “Let your sweet reasonableness be known unto all men.” That you are a reasonable believer. We ought not to be given to bigotry, always emphasizing some little point. What we need is to emphasize a big point, because we have one. And that big point is the person of Christ. “Let your sweet reasonableness be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.” Paul believed that the Lord Jesus would come at any moment. And Paul wasn’t looking for a Great Tribulation to enter at all. He says here, “The Lord’s at hand,” and that’s quite wonderful.

Joy is the very source of power in Christian living. “Rejoice in the Lord alway,” that means always. That means that regardless of the day, whether it’s dark or bright, whether it’s difficult or easy, whether we are facing problems and temptations or whether we are sailing through the sky on cloud nine. That is the thing that we are told and commanded. And this is a commandment now for believers. “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say”—he repeats it in case we missed it—"rejoice.” Rejoice.

The church should be a colony of heaven, and that means they ought to act like they act in heaven. Believe me, that’s not always true, is it? And they ought to have the language of heaven. And they ought to live like they live in heaven. We are a colony of heaven. And therefore, that should be our goal. That’s where we would want to go. That’s where we would want to be, would be in heaven. And we are to represent it down here today. We’re ambassadors of Christ down here. And Paul is saying now that we are to represent heaven and heaven’s message here upon earth today.

What Paul is really saying here is, that if you really have trusted Christ—if you had that revolution that he says happened to him on the Damascus road and that now Christ is the all-absorbing thinking of your mind and your time and your talent and of your possessions—then he says, “It’s going to tell in your life.” James had put it like that. He says, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.” In other words, my friend, if you haven’t any works you are not going to convince your neighbor.

When I hear Christians say today, “Oh, if I just only knew the will of God.” Well, what’s the matter with you? It’s a matter of being in touch with the Lord Jesus Christ. It’s a matter of drawing close to Him. There’s no little, easy formula today to find the will of God. This matter of the will of God is a day-by-day sort of thing. And if you are willing to be led, well, He’ll put you on the highway and keep you on the route that you ought to be on today—the freeway of life for you. And it will be a great joy to your heart.

The only way you can have salvation is through faith, because it’s a gift. I’ve just come through another birthday, and it was quite wonderful. The office here, they presented me with a gift. And do you know what I did? I believed that when they offered it to me they really intended to give it to me, and I just reached out and took it. I didn’t do a thing to merit it, to win it, or work for it, or anything. It was a gift. Now the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. And it’s Christ Himself. You either will accept Him or you won’t accept Him. That’s salvation. And you can only, by faith—it means to believe God.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
