Dr. J. Vernon McGee

The price of our freedom

September 18, 2023

We are told in Luke 21:28, “And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” Now that’s a marvelous word. It means now to set free, to pay a price and to set free. It means to liberate when the ransom is paid. It means to buy out of slavery in order to set a person free. Now man’s been sold under sin, and he’s in the bondage of sin. Man is a rotten, corrupt sinner and he can’t do anything else but sin. And he’s a slave to sin. Now Christ came to pay the price of his freedom, and that’s what the Lord Jesus meant when He said, “If the Son make you free, you’ll be free indeed.”

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

My friend, I’m going to be in heaven someday. And I’m not going to be there because Vernon McGee is a nice little boy. He’s not. You just don’t know me like I know myself. If you did, you’d tune your radio out. But wait a minute. Don’t tune it out. Because if I knew you like you know yourself, well I wouldn’t speak to you. So let’s stay together, will you? Because we’re both in the same boat, by the way. We’re all lost sinners. And the reason that I’m going to be in heaven is not because I joined the church. The reason I’m going to be in heaven is because of the mercy of God. I’m a lost sinner. And until you and I are willing to come to God as a nobody and then let Him make us a somebody, you and I’ll never get saved.

The Father chose us in Christ, and the Father predestinated us to the place of a sonship. The Father made us accepted in the Beloved. And all of this is to the praise of the glory of His grace. He’s the One that gets the credit. He’s the One did it all. And you know, that’s going to be for your good and my good. I don’t know about you today, I’m going to revel in this. I’m going to rejoice in this. And my friend, I’m going to talk about this because it’s worth talking about. Oh, my friend, how we need to see the grace of God as it’s revealed in Christ.

You’re lost, friend. That’s your condition. And God is prepared to extend mercy to you. Our problem today is that the Bible condemns the sin in our lives. And that’s the problem because of the fact when the heart is willing to turn to God, God will save you. Now that is something that’s, I know, rather strong. But maybe somebody today needs to say it like this. And He’s done this in order that He might bring you and me into heaven someday. When we get there, we’re going to find out He did it.

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you….” What is it? Well, he says: “How that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; that he was buried, that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” There’s no gospel without the resurrection. And it concerns the death of the Lord Jesus; He died for our sin. He was buried. He rose again the third day. Those are the facts. And, my friend, there’s no gospel apart from those facts. That’s what the gospel is. It’s what Jesus did for you and for me. Now this is gospel—it’s good news.

In this section here, we see that God the Father planned the church. God the Son paid for the church. God the Holy Spirit protects the church. Now the source of all of our blessings is actually the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, that He’s blessed us with all these spiritual blessings. And now He carries our mind back to the past eternity and He makes us realize that salvation is altogether of God, not at all of ourselves. Actually, you and I learn that you and I are not the originator, we’re not the promoter, nor are we the consummator of our salvation. He did it all.

Have you ever stopped to think of what we have in Christ? Christ has been made unto us, He’s been made sanctification, justification. I started out in a church as a boy working for my salvation. I didn’t do very well with that. May I say to you, Christ is my justification. And then I got saved and then I tried to work to be good. I didn’t do very well at that either. And then I found out that Christ has been made unto me sanctification. May I say I’ve got everything in Him. Friends, you can’t improve on that, can you? At least, I don’t think you can. Why, my friend, I got it all in Christ.

The most important part of the gospel is the resurrection of Christ. Without it, everything else, frankly, is meaningless; even the death of Christ. It’s the resurrection. He “was delivered for our offenses; He was raised again for our justification.” In His death, He subtracted my sin. But in His resurrection, He gave me—may I say to you—He gave me a sure, abundant entrance into heaven. And I stand in His righteousness. He’s delivered for our offenses, raised for our justification, or for our righteousness.

I remember hearing the late Dr. Harry Rimmer. Someone criticized him in downtown Los Angeles for going out and speaking in a liberal church. And he answered like this. “Why,” he says, “madam, I would go to hell and preach the gospel, if I had a return ticket.” My friend, let’s get the Word of God out today and take it anywhere, provided they’ll let us take it. I’ll go anywhere I can. And my friend, I have a good example. Paul began in Ephesus and the Word of God went out from there so that everyone in Asia heard it. Don’t you want them to hear it today? Let’s get the Word of God out!

“Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal….” And “equal” here means to not level down, but to level up. It means that you’re to do right by them. “…Knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven,” and you’re going to stand before Christ someday. Every Christian employer as well as employee will stand before God. And by the way, this does put the gospel in shoe leather, does it not? And it gets right down where the rubber meets the road. And by the way, it gets right down where your foot is walking in the factory and in the office or whatever you’re doing. You’re to do it unto the Lord because you’re going to answer to Him if you’re His child.

The glory of the Christian faith is that it never views life as ending with death or that this life is all. It always looks to the sunrise. It looks out yonder into eternity, and what a hope it offers. That gives purpose to life! I expect to live in eternity, and I’m not in a hurry to get there, I can assure you that. I want to stay in this life as long as I can—because I think that what you do here will have to do with your reward. So, I want to get a few things on my side of the ledger. Don’t think I got much, but I would like to get a few things there.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
