The gospel is for everyone

November 14, 2023

The gospel has power, my beloved, and it still has power. Now, it has power for very definite things. “It is the power of God unto salvation.” That’s the end and the effect of the gospel. Salvation is the all-inclusive term of the gospel, and it simply means deliverance. And it has everything in it, from justification to glorification. It’s both an act and a process. It’s equally true: “I have been saved, I am being saved, I shall be saved.” And it’s to everyone. It embraces the entire human race irrespective of racial or religious barriers. It’s personal, for it is directed to every individual and “whosoever will may come.” It’s for everyone.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

There are only two classes of people in the world: saints and ain’ts. And you’re a saint if you trusted Christ. It’s not your character that makes you a saint; it’s your faith in Jesus Christ. It means you’re set aside for Him. You’re beloved of God. And you’ve been called saints. That’s the kind of saint you are. You’re like Paul—called an apostle. And as he called himself at the beginning, he’s a bondslave of Jesus Christ. Who do you obey? You’re obeying someone today. A saint is one that has come to Jesus Christ, and he’s that because he’s trusted Him and he has been set aside for Jesus Christ.

How wonderful it is to be separated unto Christ, because He brings you to the place where your horizons are enlarged, and you’re given a new life in Christ Jesus. And how wonderful that new life is. It brings you to a new place and appreciation of life. Separation doesn’t mean you’re drawn in and you become little and narrow. Why it means, friends, that your life has broadened out. And today there’s so many wonderful things that you can do as a child of God, and you can have an appreciation of things today. May I say to you that it’s thrilling to live today. What a glorious, wonderful thing it is.

I hear people today say, “Should a Christian be separated from something?” I think there’s so many barren lives, they get separated from something and they’re joyless and they become very critical and some even very cynical. My friend, you’re to be separated unto Christ. Now when you’re separated unto Christ, then the separation from takes place. And the very interesting thing is it means that you’ve got a life that appeals; not one that turns people off. A lot of people turn the unsaved off by their lives. You know, Christians are salt. Salt makes you thirsty. Are you and I making anybody thirsty for Christ? He’s the Water of Life. Do we make them thirsty?

If there’s anything that’s to me almost unpardonable it is a dull, uninteresting Christian. My friend, things ought to be happening around you, if you’re a child of God. You ought to be in some sort of movement, getting this Word out. Say, we’re going to have a good time following Paul from now on. And this’ll be the cheapest trip you could be able to take in the summertime for your vacation. Why not come go along with us? We’re on a Bible Bus, by the way. We’ll go by bus, but Paul’s going to walk most of the way. But get on the bus, and let’s go through the Bible together.

“The righteous searcheth out his neighbor: but the way of the lawless seduceth them.” In other words, the righteous man wants to help his neighbor. But there’re some neighbors that are going to try to hurt you, and we need to be very careful. The righteous man, if he finds you’re wrong, he’s going to come and talk to you about it and face you with it. Nathan was the best friend David ever had, and yet it was Nathan who had the courage to point his finger and say, “You’re the man. Something you’ve got to straighten out in your life.” Well, how wonderful that is to recognize that we’ve got a good friend.

“The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of the treacherous shall destroy them.” It’s a very wonderful statement, by the way, and it just simply means this—that if a person wants to walk in the truth, if that’s the desire of your heart, the Spirit of God can be counted upon for guidance and direction. If a door was closed, it was closed. And if I didn’t have the money to go to school, I didn’t have it. But the Lord always would just open up one door and let me go in. I believe if you mean business of God, He’ll open up the door.

“A false balance is abomination to Jehovah: but a perfect weight is his delight.” God does enter into business. You can take Him into partnership. But you couldn’t have Him in the partnership if you’re crooked. And if you’re honest, He’d like to be your partner. How wonderful that should be. And that is true, I think, in Christian work. I think when anyone gives to a certain thing in Christian work—if it’s missions, it should go to missions. If it’s to go to an individual missionary, it should go to that individual missionary. God requires honesty in the dealings of those that are His.

“Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.” Without the Lord Jesus “was not anything made that was made.” All things were made by Him. He’s the first born of all creation! He is superior to all. Why? Because by Him the Father brought all things into being, for He is the uncreated God. And he “was rejoicing always before Him.” And these wonderful delights and joys come to us through the amazing grace of God today. How wonderful all of this is!

“I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.” This is something that in the life of Solomon he discovered, that when he sought God, God gave him wisdom. And he sought Him early. I used to be very harsh on students that were so pious about their study of the Bible. They felt like that there’s some sort of a miracle that’d take place in the study of the Word. Now, I believe that if you’re willing to study the Word of God that a miracle will take place—that the Spirit of God will open your mind and heart.

Have you ever noticed that there’s more said about the tongue and the abuse of it than is said about the abuse of alcohol in the Bible? And this is something that’s common to all races and all languages. Psalm 120:2, “Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips and from a deceitful tongue.” The most dangerous thing in the world is the tongue today. This thing of the lying tongue, God says He hates it. And God is Truth, by the way, and God hates the lie. God desires “truth in the inward parts,” He says. How wonderful. The Psalmist says, “Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.” How wonderful.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
