The awesome Word of God

July 4, 2023

What is your attitude today toward the Word of God? My beloved, do you tremble at His Word? Does it have any affect upon you? Does it grip your heart and grip your life? I close now. Action from the Word of God—I come back to our verse. Will you listen to Ezra? “For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, and to do it." And his point was not only to study it, not only to read it, but to do it. The greatest proof of the Bible, my beloved, is to start putting it in action. James, in his practical manner, says, “Be ye doers of the word and not hearers only.”

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Now he says, “To the saints and faithful…” Who are the faithful brethren? Well, they are the believing brethren; the saints and believing brethren, they are the same. He’s not talking about two groups of people. And we’re not saints because of what we do, but because of our position. The word means “set apart for God.” To those that are set apart for God and the believing brethren, and they’re the same ones. They’re in Christ, but they’re at Colosse. The important thing is not "where are you at?" but "who are you in?" That is the thing that’s important. It may not be good grammar, but it sure is good Bible.

You see, "with the mouth confession is made, and with the heart man believes." How about it today? He’s not asking you to make any public demonstration when he says “with the mouth.” He says bring the mouth and the heart into harmony. And I wish a lot of church members would do that today. Instead of talking about “I love Jesus and I believe in Jesus,” then get it way down in your heart, so it’ll affect your life and your walk today. If it gets into your heart, the heart will pump it right down into your feet. And you can walk it and live it.

God asks you to trust what He’s done for you. And He doesn’t ask you to do anything. He doesn’t ask you to lift your hand. He doesn’t ask you to come forward. He doesn’t ask you to do one thing where you’re sitting or listening by radio, except to trust Him. 1900 years ago, He was delivered for our offenses. He was raised for our justification that we might be right with God. He must not come down from that cross, because He’s bearing my sin. He must come up from the grave if He’s to be my Savior. Is He your Savior today?

“Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy-laden, I will rest you.” Oh, this world today is troubled and shaken. God says, “I’ll shake everything so you can see that there are things that cannot be shaken.” “No other foundation can any man lay other than that which is laid, Jesus Christ.” My friend, today troubles, burdens, carrying your sin with you today? Why don’t you bring it to the Savior? He has the answer. He has the answer to your intellect. He has the answer today to your will, to your emotions, to your body today. Why don’t you come to Him?

“I know whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that He is able to guard that which I have committed unto Him against that day.” My friend, what kind of salvation do you have? A hope so? A guess so? Or do you know? Not because there’s anything in you, because my friend if you see yourself as He sees you, you know there’s nothing in you. “It’s not in him that willeth and it’s not in him that runneth, but it is in God that showeth mercy.” It all rests on what He has done. And He said that if we trust Him that we have eternal life. Do you believe Him?

And so having mentioned the Lord Jesus Christ—and he calls him "our" Lord Jesus Christ. He’s my Savior. Can you say today He’s your Savior? And then can you say the Lord is my Shepherd? It’s one thing to say He’s a shepherd. It’s another thing to make it possessive. The Lord is my Shepherd. Can you say that today? Because he goes on to say here that He “might deliver us from this present evil world.” Now do you notice something there that’s very important? He “delivers us from this present evil world.” There is therefore a present value of the gospel, which proves its power and genuineness.

Now Paul here mentions now the Lord Jesus Christ, back there in verse three, and having mentioned him, he says now, “Who gave himself for our sins.” And here Paul gives the germ of the subject. And what is it? He gave Himself. Now nothing that you and I can add to the value of His sacrifice. Nothing. He gave Himself. What do you have to give, friends? Anything? Can you add anything to the fact He gave Himself? And when you give yourself, you’ve given everything. You’ve given who you are, what you’ve got, your time; you’ve given talent, you’ve given it all. He gave Himself. He couldn’t give any more. And you and I can’t add to that.

Now he says here, “Be of one mind (that is, the mind of Christ), live in peace.” Now you’re to live in peace. You can’t make it but you can live in peace. "And the God of love and peace shall be with you." Now what is that? It’s the peace of God that passeth all understanding. It’s the peace that He made by the blood of His cross. Live in that peace today. Just rejoice in your salvation. And he says here, “And the God of love and peace shall be with you.” God’s with you. Don’t miss that. He’s with you today, friends. Oh how wonderful this is. You’re not alone. He’s with you today.

Paul says, “Now I pray to God that you do no evil, not that we should appear approved, but that you should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates. For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.” My friend, you can’t do anything against the truth. I don’t worry about these folk today that are disagreeing. That’s all right. You can do nothing against the truth but for the truth. This is a great verse. We should declare the Word of God, therefore, not defend it. It doesn’t need defending. Just declare it. Just give it out. Oh, that’s the important thing, let’s give it out. We can’t do anything against the truth, but for the truth, and God will bless that.

"Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?" Now I think every Christian regularly—and this hasn’t anything to do with free will or election or the security of the believer, but this is an inventory that every believer ought to make. Well, I think we ought to make it two or three times during the year. Examine yourself. See whether you be in the faith or not. You’re willing really to face up to it, and they should see whether they’re in the faith or not.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
