Dr. J. Vernon McGee

Sanctification and justification

September 8, 2023

Have you ever stopped to think of what we have in Christ? Christ has been made unto us, He’s been made sanctification, justification. I started out in a church as a boy working for my salvation. I didn’t do very well with that. May I say to you, Christ is my justification. And then I got saved and then I tried to work to be good. I didn’t do very well at that either. And then I found out that Christ has been made unto me sanctification. May I say I’ve got everything in Him. Friends, you can’t improve on that, can you? At least, I don’t think you can. Why, my friend, I got it all in Christ.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

The most important part of the gospel is the resurrection of Christ. Without it, everything else, frankly, is meaningless; even the death of Christ. It’s the resurrection. He “was delivered for our offenses; He was raised again for our justification.” In His death, He subtracted my sin. But in His resurrection, He gave me—may I say to you—He gave me a sure, abundant entrance into heaven. And I stand in His righteousness. He’s delivered for our offenses, raised for our justification, or for our righteousness.

I remember hearing the late Dr. Harry Rimmer. Someone criticized him in downtown Los Angeles for going out and speaking in a liberal church. And he answered like this. “Why,” he says, “madam, I would go to hell and preach the gospel, if I had a return ticket.” My friend, let’s get the Word of God out today and take it anywhere, provided they’ll let us take it. I’ll go anywhere I can. And my friend, I have a good example. Paul began in Ephesus and the Word of God went out from there so that everyone in Asia heard it. Don’t you want them to hear it today? Let’s get the Word of God out!

“Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal….” And “equal” here means to not level down, but to level up. It means that you’re to do right by them. “…Knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven,” and you’re going to stand before Christ someday. Every Christian employer as well as employee will stand before God. And by the way, this does put the gospel in shoe leather, does it not? And it gets right down where the rubber meets the road. And by the way, it gets right down where your foot is walking in the factory and in the office or whatever you’re doing. You’re to do it unto the Lord because you’re going to answer to Him if you’re His child.

The glory of the Christian faith is that it never views life as ending with death or that this life is all. It always looks to the sunrise. It looks out yonder into eternity, and what a hope it offers. That gives purpose to life! I expect to live in eternity, and I’m not in a hurry to get there, I can assure you that. I want to stay in this life as long as I can—because I think that what you do here will have to do with your reward. So, I want to get a few things on my side of the ledger. Don’t think I got much, but I would like to get a few things there.

But how about the gifts of the Spirit? How wonderful it was to know, friends, that every believer today has a gift! I can’t think of anything more thrilling than that! Now, can you think of anything more wonderful today than to know that God’s given you a gift if you’re a Christian, and that you are to function in this world? And not only function in this world, my friend, you are to be a partner with Jesus Christ in the tremendous enterprise of making Him known. And what a challenge it is to young people today to find out what their gift is and exercise it. That gives purpose to life.

Do you remember back in the Gospels when the Lord Jesus one night put His own in a boat and sent them across the Sea of Galilee, and he told them, “Go to the other side.” And He sent them right into a storm. As God, He knew that storm was coming. He deliberately sent them into the storm. Now, I personally believe the Lord sends us into a storm. And, friends, we need to remember when we’re in that storm that if we’re in His will that He’s promised one thing. He never promised we’d miss the storm—He did promise we’d make the harbor. And that’s the comfort that should come to the child of God in the time of the storm.

Now he says here, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, in all wisdom,” knowledge. Now friends, what does it mean now to be filled with the Holy Spirit? You’ll have to be filled with the word of Christ also. It’ll have to dwell in you richly, and when it dwells in you richly, then it is inspired by the Spirit of God. Then you’re filled with the Spirit of God. I do not believe that you can serve Christ until you’re filled with the knowledge of His Word. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

Here is the principle for Christian living: “Whatsoever ye do in word or deed….” Now he doesn’t tell you what to do; He just says, “…whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” My friend, are you able? Whatever you do, whatever your job is, whatever you do in the home, whatever you do in your relationship to others, in your social life, can you say, “I’m doing this in the name of the Lord Jesus”? Now if you can do that, then you go ahead and do it, whatever it is. If you can do it in His name—this is a marvelous standard. This is a yardstick to put down on your life.

It’s wonderful to seek the things which are above and think that we’re living above the smog of this world. But friend, you and I have got feet that reach right down to walk in the home, walk on the job, walk in the social relationships, and we’re to live out the fullness of Christ. And that is the Christian life, by the way. It’s not following some little legal system or following some little system today—and I don’t care how good the system might be, it’s only as you and I live out the life of Christ.

And then you begin to move by the providence of God. Oh, He wants to lead you today. He wants to guide you directly. I don’t care who you are, but you can know the luxury and the joy of coming to Him, and not just in one act, but moment-by-moment and day-by-day, seeking the will of God for your life. And you won’t have to come down front in some service to do this. You can just begin to walk out from right where you are right now in the will of God. How wonderful it is. What joy it is. He wants to lead you.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
