Salt

January 16, 2024

“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt.” And a great many people think, “Let your speech be salt.” They really sting you with, you know, little sarcastic remarks. But it means “always, with grace, seasoned with salt.” In other words, a child of God should have a conversation that deters evil, not promotes it. Should withhold it, you see. And I think it also has in it the idea, don’t be boring as a Christian. Oh, the Lord forgive us for being boring as Christians. We ought to be excited about all this. “That ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

“Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” Now that simply means that you’re not going to have to report to your boss maybe. When his back is turned, he doesn’t see that you’re loafing on the job. He doesn’t see that you’re not really giving him a full day’s work. But the Lord Jesus does. And you’re going to answer to Him because, see, you are in Him and you belong to Him. And therefore, you have to give an account of your life to Him. And since we represent Him down here upon the earth, He’s going to ask that His representative be found faithful, you see.

Paul could reduce his life down to just one goal. The one thing had top priority in his life. “This one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth for those things which are before; I press toward the mark of the prize of a high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” You see, he had his eye and his mind and his heart and his total affections fixed upon Jesus Christ. Now that reduces life down to the lowest common denominator and gives us the highest answer that you can get. And, of course, that answer is Christ Himself.

“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” Now that doesn’t mean that we become a doormat, but it does mean that when we have a complaint we’re to go to the individual and try to work the matter out. And there are a great many that you can’t, of course. Our Lord denounced the Pharisees, and there was no thought there—any thought at all of forgiveness. And there are people that you and I just can’t get along with. But we are to forgive one another, even as Christ forgave us.

Have you ever walked on a mountainside or walked by the seashore and you could just look up and say, “You’re my Lord. The Creator, the Redeemer, the Lord Jesus, you’re my Lord.” Have you ever told Him that? I’ve got a little grandson and you can’t imagine what it means to an old man to have him crawl up in your lap and put his arms around you and tell you that, “You’re my grandpa.” And I have a Heavenly Father and, I’m of the opinion that He likes for us and our Savior likes for us some time to come to Him and tell Him, “You’re my Lord.”

“Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.” It was Lord Lyndhurst who made this statement, “I know pretty well what evidence is, and I tell you such evidence as that for the resurrection has never broken down yet.” The historical fact of the resurrection of Christ is that you and I, when He died, He took your place and my place. When He was raised, we were raised in Him and we’re joined today to a living Christ. Oh, my friend, how important that is for us to see today—that we’re joined to a living Savior.

Need help today? You need a partner today? I want to recommend one to you. He’ll never desert you. Never leave you nor forsake you. And He says, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end.” You may desert Vernon McGee but He never will. And that’s the reason I depend on Him more than I depend on you, my friend. And that’s the reason you ought to depend on Him instead of depending on me. Oh, that there might be praise in your mouth and in my mouth, and your life and my life, and your heart and my heart today. Praise to God.

“And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power.” Now you’re complete. Actually, this is a nautical term, and you could translate it like this in a very vivid way: “You are ready for the voyage of life in Him.” Isn’t that a wonderful way of putting it? You’re ready for the voyage of life in Christ and whatever you need for the voyage of life. Now that is where we say Christ is the answer. What’s your question? What is it you need today? Are you carried away by philosophy? Then turn to Christ. Are you carried away today by enticing words? Turn to Christ.

He speaks of “the tradition of men.” That’s quite interesting. This is the thing, you remember, that the Lord Jesus condemned the religious rulers for in His day—that they taught the tradition of men rather than the Word of God. And that, very frankly, is one of the things that has turned us to teach the total Word of God, because it’s so easy for all of us to lift out some peculiar interpretation that we have of a particular passage. Now I believe in prophecy, but there’s more in the Word of God than prophecy. And that’s one reason, I think, today that we ought to study the total Word of God; not just part of it, but the total Word of God.

“In whom [and that’s Christ] are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” We’re told here that He is the reservoir of all knowledge. In the science building where I went to college, there was a motto on the bulletin board: “Next to knowing is knowing where to find out.” Well, friends, I don’t know everything, and I’m sure many of you’ve discovered that by now—but I know where to find out. Because I know somebody who does. “Christ has been made unto us wisdom,” and we need to rest in that. “All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” are in Him. And how wonderful this is.

That their hearts might be comforted….” Now “heart” here indicates the entire inner man. That means the whole, propulsive nature of man. That’s our humanity. That their hearts, their humanity, their persons might be comforted. The word here actually means “knit together” and might be comforted—being knit together in love. And that means compacted. Love just draws them together. After all, the thing that unites a church is not gifts or even what we call today spirituality. The thing that unites believers is love, friends. It’s the cement that holds us together. It’s Elmer’s glue, if you please.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
