Respond to God’s love

February 12, 2025

A great many people say, “Why doesn’t God break through today and why doesn’t God do this…?” Well, I don’t know why God doesn’t do a lot of things. He just hasn’t told me, but He’s God and I happen to be a little creature down here and I lack a great deal of information. And I’m not able to answer. But I do know this: God’s not going to force you. God’s not going to push you. He moved heaven and hell to get to the door of your heart, and He stopped there and politely knocked on the door and said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” That’s where He is. He’s never crashed the door. He’s not going to push Himself in. You’ll have to respond to love.

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

It’s wonderful when you have a relationship with God, and you can go to the Lord Jesus Christ and say to Him, “I love You. I belong to You. You belong to me.” Remember Paul said even to the Corinthians, he says, “Everything is ours. Paul is yours, and the world is yours, and Christ is yours.” Have you made Him yours, friend? Do you belong to Him and does He belong to you? And if He does, you’ve got something good going, I’ll tell you that. There’s no relationship quite like that today. May I say to you, the important thing—the all-important thing—is a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

The way to God is in recognition of the fact that we’re a sinner; we need a sacrifice, that which points to the Lord Jesus Christ. Before He came and since He came, it must be a faith in Him—so that today the way to God is not a church, and I believe in the church. And it’s not a ceremony, and I believe in a ceremony. It’s not in service, although service certainly has its place. But it’s in a personal relationship to Jesus Christ. “I am the way, the truth and the life; no man cometh to the Father, but by me.” And you come as a sinner. You come trusting Him as a Savior.

Are you uncertain today, not knowing where to turn? You need a Savior. He came 1900 years ago. And God now has communicated with man. He hasn’t told us very much. But He’s told us enough. “Though a man be a fool and a wayfaring man, he needn’t error,” because this is a roadmap bringing you to “the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world.” And He can take away your sin. And all He asks you to do is to trust Him. All He asks you to do is to receive Him. He wants to be your Savior. He loves you. He only asks you to turn to Him today.

When you grow in grace and in the knowledge of Him, there will come a day when you’ll be able to lay hold of a living Savior at God’s right hand. Andrew Murray, years ago, wrote, “The knowledge of Christ Jesus that we need for conversion does not suffice for growth, for progress, for sanctification, for maturity.” We have to lay hold to the living Christ if we’re to grow today. And the only way we can grow is through the Word of God. This is God’s food. He has no other formula. It’s a simple formula, but it’s all important. There must be the Word of God.

We need to come very close to Him in these days and bring reality into our faith. God does discipline His children. And if you don’t want it to hurt, the thing to do is to get close to Him. It won’t hurt nearly as badly. You remember He says that He was the vine, we’re the branches, and that the Father was going to prune the branches. And that hurts, you know, to be trimmed off like that. But the Father is never so close to the vine and the branches as when He’s trimming them. That’s wonderful. May I say, we need to get close to Him.

How do you respond, friends, when suffering comes? Do you rebel against Him? Do you ever take an inventory of your life when trouble comes? Do you turn your stumbling blocks into steppingstones? Why did God let this happen to me? That’s a good question, but I want to tell you there’s a better answer to it. There’s a goal to be attained, a race to be won, a battle to be fought, and there’s a benefit here and now. And I believe that the most important thing for us to do today is to “draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to us….” We need to get close to Him.

Thank God, David came to the place where he saw what an awful, foul sinner he was, and then he cried out to God for a new heart. The Lord Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” Do you think you’ll ever see God? If it depended upon my heart, I’m very frank with you, I’ll give up; I’ll never see Him. But I am thankful this morning for the One who can give you a new heart. My Beloved, He shed His blood that you might have a new heart. His heart was broken that He might have a remedy today for your heart.

You know, separation today, the emphasis has been on “from”—we’re separated from something. I don’t do this; I don’t do that. Separation is not “from,” it’s “unto.” We’re to go to Jesus. And the Hebrews are told here that we’re “to go without the camp bearing His reproach.” These people hated to leave the temple and religion, and there are a lot of Christians today that are so wrapped up in churchianity and think because they’re members of a church they’re saved. And a great many folk today need to get away from ritual, need to get away from religion, and come to Christ, friends. Come to Him. And that’s real separation. And by the way, it’s real salvation.

Jesus was a man. And He’s the same today, but He’s God. He could weep at a tomb because He’s human, but He could say to Lazarus, “Come forth.” And may that same One today meet you in your need. He can sympathize with you. He can weep with you. He can laugh with you. Or He can save your soul. I wish that I could present Him like He really was when He came to this earth. How wonderful He was. And your sorrow is His sorrow, and your joy is His joy today. And He’s going to be the same in the future…the same yesterday, today, and forever. He’s never going to change.

Jesus Christ, He’s up yonder at God’s right hand today. He still wants little children to come to Him. He still has His arms out for them. And sinners can still come to Him, and He can still say, even to the one that’s gone to the very depths, “Go, and sin no more. I can free you.” And if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. You can come to Him. A great many people feel gingerly going sometimes into church or into meetings. You know, if Jesus was there in that meeting, I think you’d hear His laughter, and I think you’d fall in love with Him as a person, as a man.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
