No more tears

March 23, 2023

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.” Now that is something that you and I have never seen—a world or a home or a person who has never shed a tear. This is a world that’s filled with tears. Now tears are the badge of heartbreak, home break, disappointments. You and I are in that kind of a world today. Won’t it be wonderful to be in a city, regardless of its shape, where there will be no more tears? Paul said, “You know, I’d like to be at home with the Lord." It means no more tears; never again a tear.

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

I believe that one of the reasons that so many of God’s people have become discouraged along life’s pathway today is because they’ve lost sight of the place that we’re going. Many of God’s children are so wrapped up in this world today, like a kitty in a ball of yarn, that they’ve lost sight of the fact that we are pilgrims and strangers down here. And that to look forward to this place brings courage and comfort to the heart today. For the word that Paul uses has in it both courage and comfort if you please.

What God really wants to do is this: He wants to save sinners because He just loves to. He just wants to give all that’s good in Him, His best, His all, in order that He might bring sinners to heaven. And friends, that’s not going to end it all. Heaven is not static. Throughout the endless ages of eternity, He’ll be bringing out something new to give us—because it’s His grace. That’s going to be one of the glories of heaven. I think every day the Lord will come forth as something new.

God delights today in doing good. God just wants to give of Himself to others. And that’s His grace. That’s His grace. That passion—wanting to do the very best He can for you. God wants to do for you the very best that He possibly can. Fact of the matter is that’s the reason He saved you. The reason God saved you is not because you and I are lovely. It’s not because there’s some good in us. It’s not because He’s obligated. He’s not. God wants to save us and does save us because He just wants to. He delights in saving sinners. He just takes joy in that. And that’s grace.

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.” Now this man didn’t live in this sin. This is the only time he committed it. You see, he’s God’s man, and the prodigal son may get in the pigpen. He won’t stay in the pigpen. David said, “I want to get out. I want to be cleansed; I want to be washed.” And that’s the mark of a child of God. If you can live comfortably in sin, you’re not God’s child. Let’s face up to it.

David was God’s man, and he did not lose his salvation. God made that very clear to him. The fact of the matter is he didn’t get by with his sin. It answers the question, and it ought to answer the question, of whether God will tolerate sin in the life of one of His children. God will not. If you are living in sin and you think you’re a child of God, and you’re getting by with it, you’re not a child of God. I can say that on the authority of the Word of God. You can’t get by with it.

The circumstances of the believer may not warrant rejoicing. But he sees the future, and in hope he projects himself into other circumstances which are more favorable. I think of the brother down in my southland years ago that in a church service they were giving their favorite Scripture, and he got up and said his favorite was “it came to pass.” And everybody looked puzzled. The preacher stood up, and he said, “Brother, how in the world can ‘it came to pass’ be your favorite?” “Well,” he said, “when I read in the Bible ‘it came to pass,’ I know that when I have trouble or I have problems that they ‘came to pass’—they didn’t come to stay—and that there’ll be a new day out there.”

Every individual in the church has a gift, and the gift is part and parcel of the grace of God to us. When God saves you, He puts you in the body of believers, and you’re to function—not to function as a machine, but to function as a member of a body, a living organization. Now the gift is exercised and it’s confirmed by the power of the Holy Spirit. And I think every believer needs to test his gift. If you have a gift and you feel like that you’re using it, you ought to test it, make an inventory. Are you really a blessing to folk? Are you building up the church?

“For if the casting away of them (that is, Israel) be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?” I think that verse is very clear. It’s a wonderful thing. I think the greatest days are ahead of us, friends. As far as man is concerned, the world’s going to the dogs. Things are bad when you look outside today; isn’t that true? And man today has got this thing in a mess. But my God, He’s on the throne. And He’s going to straighten it out, you know. And the greatest days yet are in the future. Oh, what a future.

“And if by grace, then it is no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.” In other words, grace and works represent two mutually exclusive systems. They’re diametrically opposed to each other. And the remnant at this time are those that are not saved by works or by merit, but they’re saved by the grace of God. That is what Paul is saying. The future purpose of God, from the day Paul wrote down to the present, is those that will accept the grace of God.

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” And, friends, I come back to this. I think this is God’s method—I may sound like a stuck record to you, but I must say this. I believe that it’s not actually by preaching, philosophy, or psychology, or some political nostrum, but I believe that today it’s the preaching of the Word of God. It’s not what I think, it’s what the Word of God says. “Faith cometh by hearing…” Hearing what? “Hearing by the Word of God.” Until you hear the Word of God, you can’t be saved. Oh, how important that is.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
