Lost sheep

September 3, 2024

“I will seek that which was lost ….” This is the Shepherd that when He got sheep lost, He goes out after it. And for the nation Israel, He’ll do that. For the church today, that’s what He says of the church today. And there was a shepherd that had 100 sheep; one sheep got lost. What did He do? Forget it and say, “Well, man, if the little fellow wants to run off. After all, 99 sheep—that’s a pretty good number to come through with.” But this Shepherd says, “I started out with 100, I’m going to come through with 100. Vernon McGee’s going to be there.” Not because he’s a smart sheep, because sheep are stupid. He’s going to be there because I’ve got a wonderful Shepherd. And He says, “I will, I will. I will!” And again, and again!

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

I don’t care who you are, you’re going to stand before God. Now if you’re a child of God, He’ll judge you for your sin. You won’t lose your salvation, but He’ll take you to the woodshed. Now if you’re a lost man, you’ve got no claim on God at all. He doesn’t say He won’t hear the prayer of the wicked. He just says He hears the prayers of the righteous, and He’s not obligated to hear the others. But if that wicked man would cry out to Him, God would deliver him. When you hear people today say, “Why does God let this happen?” and they’re unsaved—well, my friend, you have no claim on God. God’s righteous, and we forget that this happens to be His world.

And my friend, today, you and I are sinners, can’t rush into the presence of God. He loves us. He doesn’t save us by love; He saves us by grace. Because He can’t put it on a merit basis—you and I’d miss out altogether. But He has put it on the basis that His Son died for us. He did that because He loved us, but by grace He reaches down and says, “I’ll save you.” But He also says, “You’re lost. You shall not perish if you believe on the Son.” What’s the alternative? Well, you are going to perish if you don’t believe on the Son. It’s just that simple.

If you had cancer and I was a medical doctor and you came to me, I’d tell you what you had. And the Great Physician says to you and me, we’ve got something worse than cancer. We have the flesh. And it will destroy you. It’s our enemy. And He says to “Flee! Flee from these things and follow after righteousness, peace, faith, love.” All of these speak of Christ. “If we confess our sins ….” Take them to Him, the Great Physician. I tell you, friends, He’ll deal with the thing that’s defeating many of us as Christians and give you the victory.

“If we will confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” If tonight a Christian will deal with that thing in his life, God will give him a victory. I tell you, friends, we have to deal with the flesh, and to confess means to agree with God about it. You have to agree with God that you’ve got that kind of a nature, and it’s as bad as He says that it is. My friend, Christ died to deliver us from the world, the flesh, and the devil. And He wants us to have a victory over the flesh.

Are you willing to believe the Bible when it says that “there is no good thing dwelling within your flesh”? My friend, until you are willing to take that position, you’re already defeated. The very minute that you believe that somehow or another that you can tamper it and excuse it, that it’s not as bad as Scripture says it is. May I say that you’re doomed to awful defeat. Not until you and I come to the position and stand at the cross of Christ and say, “He’s dying because I’m a vile, rotten sinner,” we have never, never even gotten in the battle that leads to victory over the flesh.

If you’ve come in here with burdens and problems, and you’re overwhelmed today and you’re discouraged; you have no hope. May I say to you this morning, He died, He was buried, He was raised that you might have life. He showed Himself alive by many infallible proofs. He says to you, “Trust Me. Bring your burdens.” And that power that raised Him from the dead can work in your life, can work in your heart, bringing salvation—bringing a solution to the problems of life, lifting the burdens, renewing a right Spirit within you, and giving you eternal life. Do you know Him today?

Jesus died, He was buried, and He came back from the dead. And it’s the resurrection that gives validity to the virgin birth. It’s the resurrection that gives value to the cross. It’s the resurrection that gives veracity to the gospel. And today the gospel is not just a pious platitude to whisper in hushed tones. But it’s a historical event to be screamed from the street corner by the paperboy in broad daylight. And it is subject to inspection and examination. There’s no ambiguity, my friend, about the facts of the gospel.

“Nay … we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” and He gave His Son to die for us on the cross. Oh, my friend today, do you have a sorrow? Do you have unfulfilled desires and hopes that have been crashed to the earth? Bring them to the foot of the cross. Bring them to Jesus. He bore your sins. Have you been to—been to Calvary? Where He revealed His love for you. In this world today with all of its sadness, are you finding the burden too hard in the heat of the day? Oh, bring it to Him.

If you are saved today, it’s not because you willed it. It’s not because you worked. It’s not because of anything in you. It’s because God today showed mercy to you. God says, “I’m not obligated to receive anyone. When I save, it’s because I extend mercy.” And He’s free to extend mercy. If He’s not, then He’s not God, and my friend it’s not mercy if He’s obligated. God saves today because He’s merciful.

Nowhere in the Word of God will you find such a graphic picture of the sovereignty of Almighty God than in this figure of the Potter. We’ve forgotten in our days the rights of God. We’ve emphasized so much the rights of man. We say today God can’t do certain things. My beloved, this morning we need to remind ourselves that God has incontestable authority. He has an irresistible ability to form and to fashion individuals and nations. This is His universe. This is His universe.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
