Let’s grow

December 10, 2024

“Therefore, leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works.” Let’s go on—let’s get moving, friends. Spiritually, let’s quit staying where we are today. All we do is marking time. Let’s go on. Let’s begin growing. May the Word of God grip our hearts. May it enter into our lives. May we be able to take it into the workshop, into the classroom, wherever go, wherever we move, into the home. Wherever we are, let’s be able to take the Word of God with us, friends.

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” We can speak freely to the Lord Jesus Christ. You know, I can tell Him things I can’t tell you. And He understands me. He knows my weakness, and I’ve learned to be very frank with Him. Not attempt to become buddy-buddy. He is God, and I come in worship and reverence to Him, but I’m free to speak because He’s also a man. He’s God, but He’s Man, and I come to Him. And I can come boldly—if you understand by that I can come with great freedom. I can tell Him what’s on my heart.

But He was tested; and, for that reason, He knows how we feel. We have a high priest that understands us, and He’s always available. He’s always there, and He understands us. He understands us not academically, but He is in the flesh, and down here He was tested. He was touched with the feeling of our infirmity. He knew what it was to weep. He knew what it was to hunger. He knew what it was to be touched with sorrow. Jesus wept. He was touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but without sin.

“All things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” You can’t conceal anything from Him. I labored under the delusion as a young Christian that I would not let God in on everything that was in my life. I’d pray that He’d give me certain things and do certain things, but I’d never let Him know the motive. But He knew it all the time. He is One that knows the thoughts of the heart, and everything is open to Him today! My friend, your life is an open book to Him. Somebody says, “You think we ought to confess everything to Him?” Well, why don’t you, my friend? He already knows. Just as well tell Him all about it. How wonderful this is.

I think that this is the supreme satisfaction that comes to a child of God, that he’s in the will of God, that he’s doing the work of God, and that he can trust God—that he can just rest in Him. That place that Mary came to. She sat at Jesus’ feet, and Martha’s back yonder in the kitchen with those pots and pans. She was really worn to a frazzle. But Mary had already done her work. And if we just learn to sit at Jesus’ feet, that satisfaction— “Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.” And friends, the only thing in the world that can rob you of that rest is unbelief.

I wonder really when you begin to think this through, isn’t it a matter of conceit on our part to think that you and I as sinners could do something that would cause God to say, “Oh, my, what a nice little fellow you are. And I’m so happy to have you in heaven, because you are sure going to add a great deal to it.” Why, my friends, that’s not the picture at all. He did it all for us, you see. Because even our righteousness is filthy rags in His sight. He can’t accept our righteousness because we don’t have any. “There are none righteous; no, not one.” And, therefore, He offers a finished salvation to you. And when you trust Christ, you become a new creation in Christ Jesus.

Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, today, after so long a time; as is said, today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” Now, he’s saying, “not tomorrow, but today.” And today is today for you and me. Back yonder, it was another day for these folks that the writer here is addressing. But, my friend, today—right now, wherever you are, look at your watch or clock. What time is it? Well, this is the time of salvation. This is now. Now! Right now you can trust Christ as your Savior. “Today, if you will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” What a wonderful thing!

“For if Jesus (or Joshua) had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.” You remember that even it says Joshua was old and stricken in years, and yet there was very much land to conquer. You see, they hadn’t entered into all the blessing God had for them. Joshua wasn’t able to do it. But, my friend, if you trust Christ, Christ can let you enter into the Canaan of the present day—the blessing of the present day when there will be fruit in your life, blessing in your life, and joy in your life. Oh, how believers need this today. And what robs us of it? Unbelief. Unbelief. Oh, trust Him today.

Now if you were to ask me today, “What is the great sin in your life, preacher? What is it that’s held you back more than anything else?” I’ll tell you what it is, I don’t mind making the confession. Unbelief. Oh, if I’d only believed God. I go back in my ministry and, I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t believe God like I should. That’s my problem. Maybe it’s your problem. I want to believe God, and if there’s one thing today I want above everything else, I want to believe God. I want to trust Him. I want to commit my life to Christ. Oh, if I could just turn it over to Him.

I do not know who you are, but in this great company today, there will be some folk that have actually not come to Christ, and the thing that’s keeping you from Christ is not intellectual. There is sin in your life, and you do not want to give it up. That’s your problem. That’s your difficulty. The minute that your heart is ready to give it up, that very moment your problems will dissolve. He’ll take the veil away from your mind, and you can come to Christ and be saved. But, my friend, as long as you hold onto that sin in your life that’s what’s keeping you from Christ. Now if you turn to Him, oh my friend, the future that will await you. And how you can grow in grace and in the knowledge of Him.

Have you entered into the rest that believers are to have? Are you a rejoicing Christian today? Well, you’ll find out that the only way to do it is to come to the Word of God, is to believe the Word of God, and study the Word of God. How many Christians—how many church members today—really study the Word of God? Well, my friends, we’re told in Scripture that the Word of God is quick and powerful. Now that primarily refers to the Lord Jesus. It refers to the written Word, too. Therefore, the only way you and I can stay close to Him is to stay close to the Word of God, studying the Word of God.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
