It’s a calling

I think that a man should be very sure that he has a call from God, if he’s going to be in the ministry. If there’s any doubt in his mind, he ought not to go in the ministry. I’ve heard it put like this: that if you can do anything else, why, don’t go in the ministry. Well, I don’t like it quite like that because a great many of us could have done something else, by the way. And might have preferred doing it. The important thing is: Did God call you? And if God has called you, then may I say that we ought not to let anything stand in the way.

Suppose that in the next few minutes you were to be in God’s presence. What about it, friends? This life is past. You maybe lived to please people, tried to keep up with the Joneses. But that’s ended now, you’re in His presence. How are you going to stand before Him? Don’t you know that you can’t stand in your own strength, your own life, your own character? You and I haven’t anything to offer to Him at all. We stand before Him because He was delivered for our offences. He paid the penalty. Now we stand before Him in the righteousness of Christ. And that, my friend, is the only basis that we can stand before Him.

I believe that, very frankly, you and I today are more responsible to God than the people that are denied Bibles, that are not hearing the Word of God at all. We are more responsible than they are. Have you ever stopped to think the tremendous responsibility that you and I have today? The privilege, we say, of having the Word of God—and we thank God for that—and we boast of the fact that we have the Bible and all of that. Yes, but my friend, what are you doing about it? That’s the important thing today. Are you doing anything about helping get out the Word of God today?

Oh, my friend today, regardless of the position of the body, we need to pray today. And regardless of the position of the body, our hearts and lives should be on their knees before Him. In fact, we should be down on our faces before Him. Salvation today is determined by this posture of the soul. The epistle to the Romans that presents justification by faith and says that no sinner can even wiggle a finger and contribute to his salvation—that it’s all of God, that He does it all. But when you’re willing to come and there receive what He has to offer, God can and will save you.

I’ve learned that that’s a wonderful lesson as far as God’s concerned. If you start running away from Him and get on the end of the switch, it's going to hurt. When God starts disciplining you or letting you suffer, start moving toward Him and it won’t hurt. When the children of Israel were going through the wilderness, they came to the bitter waters, but they put in those waters a tree, and it made them sweet. That tree is the cross. You can trust this wonderful Savior. He says: “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden; I will rest you.” Do you know what it is to bring your burdens, your sorrows, and your sufferings to Him?

You and I are dealing with a Savior and with a God that will never throw you overboard. Have you ever noticed those that have been His that He’s never thrown overboard? He never threw Jacob overboard. He should have, but He didn’t. And Jonah? May I say to you tonight, friends, He’ll not throw you overboard. He didn’t throw Simon Peter, the man who denied Him—the man who three times in one night and one time with an oath said, “I don’t even know Him.” The Lord said, “I pray that your faith fail not.” He’ll never throw you overboard.

“Wherefore, beloved, seeing that we look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.” In other words, we’re to live a holy life down here. That means a life separated unto God. And, friends, after all, what is really worthwhile in this earth today? What are your goals? Are you a productive Christian today, moving to a worthwhile goal? Well, somebody says, “I’m going to raise my family.” That’s worthwhile. Somebody says, “I want to make a good living for my family and educate my children.” That’s worthwhile. These things are worthwhile. But really, what is the object of your life? Is it to live for God? And if you live for God today, all of these secondary issues, I believe, will take care of themselves.

Now, you know you can’t keep God from loving you. You can’t keep God from loving you, but you can put up an umbrella of indifference, an umbrella of sin, an umbrella of rebellion, and you won’t experience it, but He loves you. May I say to you, friends, you can turn your back on him. You can blaspheme Him. You can treat Him anyway, but you cannot keep Him from wanting to save you. You can’t keep Him from loving you. For He provided a Savior; gave His Son to die, and Jesus today wants to save you. He wants to. And He will save you if you’ll turn to Him and receive the salvation that He offers in Jesus Christ.

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; He is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” Now, He’s longsuffering, and He’s not rushing things. After all, He’s got eternity ahead of Him. He’s had eternity back of Him. He doesn’t need to worry about time. A thousand years, one day; one day is a thousand years. But the thing is, it’s inevitable. It is coming. It will descend upon the earth someday. And now God is giving men everywhere an opportunity. And that’s the reason we want to get the Word out. It’s the only thing that can change hearts and lives.

You see the Word of God is not only divine and not only deity, but it is also human; very human. It’s like the Lord Jesus—He was both God and man. And the Bible is a God-book and it’s a man-book. It deals right down here with the human life and gets right down to the nitty-gritty, right down here where you and I live and move and have our being. But yet it is God speaking to man in a language that he can understand. And it’s the only supernatural thing today that we have in this world that is tangible. This is the only physical miracle that we have today from God is the Word of God.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee
John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.
After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.
He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.
On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
