Dr. J. Vernon McGee

Instead of complaining

June 8, 2023

"Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort." Now the word here for “blessed” actually is “praise.” “Praise be to God.” I wonder how much we really praise Him. I’ve found out that I’m doing a better job of praising Him since I retired than I did when I was a pastor. Well David put it like this. David says, “I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” That ought to get rid of the complaining, friends, of a lot of saints. Psalm 34:1. “I’ll bless the Lord at all times.” How wonderful it is.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Will you listen to this? Now we have God’s comfort for life’s plan. Wonderful to be in the will of God, friends. I would say that’s the biggest business you could be in today. Now you may run for an office and be elected, and if that’s not God’s will for you, God help you. You may be president of the biggest company in the world. But if it’s not God’s will, that’d be the worst place in the world for you to be. It’d be better that you were the janitor in the place. May I say to you, to be in the will of God—how wonderful that is.

If you deny the virgin birth, you’re not a Christian. Now somebody says, “But you already said here that the gospel concerns the death, burial, and resurrection.” But my friend, who was it that died? Who was it that was buried? Who was it that rose again? Now I believe you can come to Christ and accept Him as your Savior and not know anything about the virgin birth. But, my friend, when you find out about it and you begin to come to know Him, you’re not going to deny the virgin birth. You can’t, you see. You couldn’t deny the virgin birth because you wouldn’t really have a savior.

I found when I was sick in the hospital, every night when I could read I turned to the book of Psalms and read several psalms. I find out today that on nights when I cannot sleep the part of the Word of God I like to turn to is the book of Psalms. God today wants to speak to you through this book of Psalms. He wants to comfort your heart, and He can pull out these stops as no psychiatrist can do. And you can open up your heart before the living and true God and sing praises unto Him. Praise the Lord. "The Lord is good. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so."

Whoever you are, wherever you are, however you are right now, if you mean business with God, you can get right into His presence if you want to. There are a lot of folks who are stiff-arming God today, and that’s one reason that they go through a ritual in a church—actually, to get away from God. And that’s the best way to get away from Him that I know of. But you can come directly and immediately into His presence right now. One of the great doctrines that the Reformation brought back to us was the priesthood of believers—that is, that you have access to God, Christian friend, today. And if you’re unsaved, He invites you to come to Him for salvation. God is available, and we have access we’re told to Him today.

What a glorious, wonderful psalm this is here: “I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever. Every day will I bless thee." This is not just for the Sabbath Day or for Sunday, but this is for “every day will I bless thee.” What a wonderful thing this is. There are days when we don’t feel like blessing Him. And we sometimes can sing unto Him. We praise Him for all that’s past, trust Him for all that is to come. Well, we can trust Him for all that’s past, and we can praise Him for all that is to come.

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised with our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace is upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” The answer for America today and to you and to me is a return to the Word of God and the hero of this book. The One that it presents—it’s a “Him” book. It’s all about H-I-M  Him. Job says, “That I might find Him.” And Philip said, “We have found Him.” Have you found Him? He is the answer to your problems and my problems.

“And the Word was made flesh, and pitched His tent here among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” To know this book is to know Him, the Word of God who came 1900 years ago, not only to reveal God, but to redeem man. And He died on a cross to pay the penalty of your sin and mine. Put in a tomb, but the grave could not hold Him. He burst the bands asunder, and He came up in mighty power. And God today is speaking to the world through that person in this book. It’s God’s Word.

God is faithful, oh, He’s faithful. "By whom you were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord." Oh, I want to enjoy. Life and death. Oh, death is ours. But we have One that got the victory over death. And isn't this wonderful? "Things present"—that's things of time. "Things to come"—out yonder in the future. All things are yours. "We are more than conquerors through Him that loved us." May I say to you, up yonder in glory today is a living Christ. I hope you have Christ. He’s yours, and He’s mine. And the world's. In eternity. My Father’s a King, my friend.

These are great days to live for God. He’s asked me to live for Him, asked me to get the Word out, and I’m trying to do that. And with your help and by His grace, we're going to do it. And He says, "Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things." How are you going to be worthy? I can’t be worthy. The only thing that will make me worthy is Christ. And, therefore, if I trust Him, and I’ve committed my way to Him, and I’m looking for the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and that’s the way I’m going to go out with the Rapture is by the grace of God.

"Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares." Don’t let down your guard today, friends. Don’t give up. These are great days to live for God. That’s what we’re called to do. I’m not called upon to reform the world or change the world. That’s God’s business. That’s not my business. He’s asked me to live for Him, asked me to get the Word out, and I’m trying to do that. But the thing is this is very comfortable to know that you’re in the will of God. That’s the important thing.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
