In the beginning

April 3, 2023

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." And until you are ready to take that verse and put it at the first of the Bible and accept it, my friend, you’re not prepared to read very much farther in the Word of God. Because that’s where it all rests. Did God create this universe? Or is it a happenstance? And it’s almost ridiculous to think that it just happened, that this universe just came into existence. It is like Dr. Conklin said, to make a statement like that, that it just happened, is just as ridiculous to say that as it is to say that the dictionary came into existence because they had an explosion in a print shop. There is intelligence back of this universe that you and I live in.

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

“Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed who feareth the Lord.” You can’t get away from that. Thus, there’s that reverential fear of God. Obedience unto Him. The children know whether you love the Lord, whether you’re serving Him, whether you’re obeying Him, whether He’s important in your life. My friend, there’s no substitute for that. You never have a happy home until you get rightly related with God. And when you get rightly related with God, then it’ll be amazing how many of these other problems that they just fall into place and take care of themselves.

“Blessed is everyone that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways.” What is it that makes a happy family? What’s the foundation? Oh, I know that there’s all kinds of conferences today for the family, the young family, and how they can adopt certain methods and adjust themselves to certain procedures. My friend, you can never have a happy home until there is the fear of the Lord in that home. And a home where they walk day by day in the home in the ways of the Lord. There must be the fear of the Lord.

And the very interesting thing is that many of the writers of the Talmud pointed it out. And the thing they pointed out was this: That their life is like this. We come to God as a sinner. We’re away from Him, separated from Him, alienated from Him. And then we come to Him, and as we come to Him in salvation, we come to Him in our sanctification, that we might grow in grace and the knowledge of Him. And so, it’s a constant “going up.” And we’re climbing a spiritual way. And, friends, you and I ought to be farther along today than we were last year, and we ought to recognize that.

“Thy word have I hidden in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” I think frankly what it means is this: “Thy word have I hidden in my heart,” which means “I obey it.” That’s the important thing. It’s not that you would be able to stand up and by rote be able to give verse after verse. Now that’s wonderful. I hope you won't misunderstand me, that I'm criticizing that. I believe in that. I think it’s a great program that several men are carrying on today getting young people to memorize the Word of God. But we also need to recognize that this means more than that. It means to obey it. That’s what it means to hide it in your heart.

“Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.”  My, we like to get in our little corner down here and fix it up and think it’s going to be permanent. And we get our little blanket, and we get our little false security down here. May I say to you, the best we are—we’re a pilgrim and a stranger down here. And that’s the way we ought to live this life, friend. And we’re journeying—we seek a city “whose builder and maker is God.”

And again, let me say it, the Psalms are full of Christ. There is a more complete picture of Him in Psalms than in the Gospels. The Gospels tell us that He went to the mountain to pray, but the Psalms give us His prayer. The Gospels tell us that He was crucified, but the Psalms tells us what went on in His own heart during the crucifixion. The Gospels tell us that He went back to heaven, but the Psalms begin where the Gospels leave off and show us Christ seated in the heavens.

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.” Now that is something that you and I have never seen—a world or a home or a person who has never shed a tear. This is a world that’s filled with tears. Now tears are the badge of heartbreak, home break, disappointments. You and I are in that kind of a world today. Won’t it be wonderful to be in a city, regardless of its shape, where there will be no more tears? Paul said, “You know, I’d like to be at home with the Lord." It means no more tears; never again a tear.

I believe that one of the reasons that so many of God’s people have become discouraged along life’s pathway today is because they’ve lost sight of the place that we’re going. Many of God’s children are so wrapped up in this world today, like a kitty in a ball of yarn, that they’ve lost sight of the fact that we are pilgrims and strangers down here. And that to look forward to this place brings courage and comfort to the heart today. For the word that Paul uses has in it both courage and comfort if you please.

What God really wants to do is this: He wants to save sinners because He just loves to. He just wants to give all that’s good in Him, His best, His all, in order that He might bring sinners to heaven. And friends, that’s not going to end it all. Heaven is not static. Throughout the endless ages of eternity, He’ll be bringing out something new to give us—because it’s His grace. That’s going to be one of the glories of heaven. I think every day the Lord will come forth as something new.

God delights today in doing good. God just wants to give of Himself to others. And that’s His grace. That’s His grace. That passion—wanting to do the very best He can for you. God wants to do for you the very best that He possibly can. Fact of the matter is that’s the reason He saved you. The reason God saved you is not because you and I are lovely. It’s not because there’s some good in us. It’s not because He’s obligated. He’s not. God wants to save us and does save us because He just wants to. He delights in saving sinners. He just takes joy in that. And that’s grace.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
