His will is right

Don’t stand on the sidelines and say, “I’m not elected.” You’re in the race whether you like it or not. But I never heard of anybody being elected who didn’t run. You’ve got to run for the office. If you want to be saved, you’re the elect. If you don’t, you’re not. And that’s all I know about it. I can’t reconcile it. This happens to be God’s universe. And He just didn’t let me in on this, but I’ve come to the place in the sunset of life, I can say today: God is sovereign and He’s going to do this according to His will—and His will’s going to be right.

And the thing that’s important is God is God. And you won’t change that, my friend. And now Paul uses this expression of the potter and the clay. God is the potter and we’re clay. God took man out of the dust of the earth and formed him. And He didn’t make a monkey. Man made a monkey of himself, but God didn’t make him like that. And God is the One that is in charge today. He’s God, my friend. And He rides triumphant in His own chariot, and He’s not stopping for your green light or man’s green light today. Oh, to follow His chariot today.

But as long as you’re in His universe, you’re going to play it according to His rules, my friend. Moses wanted to see the glory of God. And God said to him, “I’ll show it to you, Moses, but I’m not going to show it to you because you are Moses.” You know, Moses might come and say, “Well, I want You to show me Your glory because I’m leading the children of Israel out. I’m a pretty important fellow around this place.” God says to him, “I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. I’ll do this for you, not because you’re Moses, but because I am God.” And you know why He saved me? Not because I’m Vernon McGee, but because He’s God and He made the choice. And I just bow before Him.

We cannot intrude into the mysterious dealings of God, but we can trust Him to act in justice. We must take the Scripture at face value. And I say to you today I’m a little creature down here on this earth, and He could take my breath away from me in the very next moment. I’m a creature, and He’s God. And I’ve got the nerve enough to stand on my two feet, look Him in the face, and question what He does? May I say to you that is rebellion of the worst sort. Oh, I bow today to my Creator and my Redeemer, knowing that whatever the choice He’s made, that’s His choice.

The peace He’s talking about here, He makes it very clear what it is. We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Now that’s the peace that comes to a soul when he’s trusted Christ as Savior and he knows that God no longer has any charge against him. And he’s no longer guilty. And that God now, who had to be against him, is now for him. And that he has a salvation that’s permanent and eternal. That’s the peace that comes because of sins forgiven. And everything’s right between our soul and God, and that’s a wonderful peace.

Then there is that peace that’s known as tranquility of soul. That is the peace the Lord Jesus mentioned when He says, “My peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you, not as the world giveth, give I unto you.” That is a peace that comes to certain believers who have trusted Christ. And it’s to those who are not only resting on Him, but have committed their life to Him and are doing His will. I wish today that I could say to you that I’ve experienced this peace all the time. I suppose I’m like most of you; I have up-and-down experiences. There are times when this peace floods my soul, and it’s wonderful. I recognize, though, that it’s available for the believer.

Now the Bible mentions several kinds of peace. There’s world peace, and the United Nations has worked at it. They didn’t get anywhere in the past, and they’re not getting anywhere today. And right now a great many people believe that if you protest hard enough that you’re going to bring peace in the world, and that you can do it by human manipulation. Well, my friend, as long as there’s sin in the hearts of men, there will never be peace in the world. Not until the Prince of Peace comes—and He’ll bring peace on the earth.

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Now the devil is a paymaster, and, my friends, if you work for him, he’s going to pay you: “for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God…” And that gift, you’ve received it by faith. You’re saved by faith. You’re to live by faith. You’re to walk by faith. Because you can’t save yourself and you can’t live for God by yourself. It’s a constant, may I say, moment-by-moment walking with Him, depending on Him, looking to the Lord Jesus Christ by the power of the Spirit.

Your religion may reveal to you some very high principles, but are you living by them? Are you doing them? Here was a God-given religion, and for over a millennium these people tried to keep it. They found out that they could not. They could not measure up to God’s standard and you cannot. Religion cannot save you. But Christ can save you. He alone is the Savior. Not religion, not your church membership, not your fundamentalism. Christ is the Savior. You either have Him or you don’t have Him. You either trust Him or you don’t trust Him. Your own religion won’t save you; it condemns you. Oh, to turn to Christ today.

May I say to you that the man on top of the hill looks down at the man at the bottom of the hill, and he says, "Something should be done for that poor fellow. We ought to start a mission down there. We ought to start giving him soup and clothes and a shower-bath. But I’m living on top of the hill, and I don’t need anything." You don’t? The wall and the hurdle is as high on top of the hill as it is at the bottom of the hill. And the man at the bottom of the hill can get over it just as easy as you can. And the chances are he’ll see his need, and you won’t. May I say to you, religious people, self-righteous people, and so-called good people need a Savior.

And whatever you need, you find it in Him today. “That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” Glory in the Lord Jesus Christ today. What do you glory in? What are you boasting of today? Are you boasting of your degrees? Your wisdom? Are you boasting today of your wealth? Your power? Are you boasting of your position? Your character? My friend, you have nothing to boast of. And believe me, I know I haven’t. But we can boast of Christ. And He’s everything. He’s everything that we need today. Oh, that you and I might see that.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee
John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.
After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.
He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.
On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
