Dr. J. Vernon McGee

He’s with you right now

June 22, 2023

Now he says here, “Be of one mind (that is, the mind of Christ), live in peace.” Now you’re to live in peace. You can’t make it but you can live in peace. "And the God of love and peace shall be with you." Now what is that? It’s the peace of God that passeth all understanding. It’s the peace that He made by the blood of His cross. Live in that peace today. Just rejoice in your salvation. And he says here, “And the God of love and peace shall be with you.” God’s with you. Don’t miss that. He’s with you today, friends. Oh how wonderful this is. You’re not alone. He’s with you today.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Paul says, “Now I pray to God that you do no evil, not that we should appear approved, but that you should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates. For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.” My friend, you can’t do anything against the truth. I don’t worry about these folk today that are disagreeing. That’s all right. You can do nothing against the truth but for the truth. This is a great verse. We should declare the Word of God, therefore, not defend it. It doesn’t need defending. Just declare it. Just give it out. Oh, that’s the important thing, let’s give it out. We can’t do anything against the truth, but for the truth, and God will bless that.

"Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?" Now I think every Christian regularly—and this hasn’t anything to do with free will or election or the security of the believer, but this is an inventory that every believer ought to make. Well, I think we ought to make it two or three times during the year. Examine yourself. See whether you be in the faith or not. You’re willing really to face up to it, and they should see whether they’re in the faith or not.

Heaven’s a wonderful place. And it’s going to be so wonderful that you couldn’t describe it in human language. Now not because of the place, because I can’t tell you much about it. But I can tell you about the person who is there, and that person is the Lord Jesus Christ. And if you fix your eyes on Him, beholding Him, we are going to grow. And, friends, as we do, it’s going to make the pilgrim journey through this world a great deal easier today. The sun won’t be as hot. The burning sands of the desert won’t be as bad. And the storms of life will not be as bad if we keep our eye fixed upon the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now a great many people they say, “Well, I won’t accept Christ now. I will do it some other time.” They’ll postpone it. Now I don’t know who are you are, where you are, how you are right now, but if you’re not saved and you’re listening, for you, now is the accepted time. Right now. Not tomorrow. Not when you hear some greater preacher or hear some great message, but just listening right now. Now is the accepted time. Well somebody says, “Can’t I accept Him tomorrow?” Well, yes, but you have no promise of it. But the important thing is God says it’s right now. And it’s not now or never, but it’s right now.

But the thing is that there are those that are called to teach and those to be pastors, those to be missionaries, and then there are others that are called into a relationship. We’re workers together. If you’re sitting in the pew, if you’re listening today, you’re as responsible to get out the Word of God as I am. I’ve just probably been given a little different gift. Fact of the matter is, we today need to recognize God’s given to the church certain men that will teach, certain men that will act as pastors, certain men that have other gifts that are used for the work of the ministry. That is, to equip the believers to serve.

“For he hath made him to be sin for us (He took my place down here), who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” You know, He’s given me His place, clothed in His righteousness. Let me put it like this. He took my hell down here that I might have His heaven up yonder. He did that for me. My friend, He’s saying the same thing to you today. He’s saying, “Be reconciled.” Won’t you turn around to Him? Why don’t you come to Him? Why don’t you trust Him? He’ll take you in His hand and you’ll never perish if you come to Him.

My friends, we sometimes think that our ambition ought to be to do something great for God. God says, “I just want you to be My servant." That’s all. Remember Jeremiah put it like this in Jeremiah 45:5. He says, “Seekest thou great things for thyself? Seek them not.” That’s putting it plain enough, isn’t it? My friend, are you trying to get great things for yourself? There’re a lot of ambitious Christians, but it’s a selfish ambition. Do you want to be God’s servant? Well, my friend, if you do, then you may be able to do something that He’s going to be able to reward us for.

If you want to know the difference between Christianity, or the gospel of the grace of God, and the religions of the world, it can be expressed in one word. All of them say, “Do, do, do.” And the gospel says, "Done." D-O-N-E. Done. The gospel says God has done something for me and I’m to believe it, I’m to trust it. And that’s my approach. The only way I can come to Him—by faith. And without faith it’s impossible to please Him. My friend, Jesus died for our sin, according to the Scripture. Oh, how important that is. It’s all important, my friend.

Now what’s mercy? Well, mercy means that God so loved you that He provided a Savior for you. Because He couldn’t save you any other way. And anything that you have today is a mercy from God. He’s the father of mercy. And He's said to be rich in grace and rich in mercy. Now, do you need any mercy today? Well if you need any money, you generally go to the bank. If you need mercy, go to the one that’s the father of it. He’s the father, we’re told down here, of all mercies. He’s the God of all comfort. You need any help today? Go to Him. He’s the one.

"Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort." Now the word here for “blessed” actually is “praise.” “Praise be to God.” I wonder how much we really praise Him. I’ve found out that I’m doing a better job of praising Him since I retired than I did when I was a pastor. Well David put it like this. David says, “I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” That ought to get rid of the complaining, friends, of a lot of saints. Psalm 34:1. “I’ll bless the Lord at all times.” How wonderful it is.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
