He gives us joy

October 9, 2024

The child of God is given the Holy Spirit, and one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is joy. Friends, the child of God ought to have joy in his heart. Now it may not show on the face, I know that. You don’t have to go around smiling like a Cheshire cat all the time to prove you’re a Christian. But you ought to have joy down in your heart. And may I say this to you tonight, if you’re a Christian and do not have joy in your heart, there’s something wrong with your Christian life. Something radically wrong. Because it is His intention that the Holy Spirit produce joy in your life.

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

There is not a person who can live the Christian life. And, furthermore, God never asked you to live the Christian life. You can’t show me a passage where God asks you to live it. What God did ask is for the permission of living it through you by the power of the Holy Spirit. You and I cannot live the Christian life, but the Holy Spirit of God can. our Lord said, “Ye must be born again … that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” And when a child of God is born again and becomes a child of God, he’s given the indwelling Holy Spirit. And it’s by the power of the Holy Spirit that he is to live.

It’s wonderful, my friend, to know the grace of God that reaches down and by His mercy—not by effort, not by trying, but by trusting. Not by doing something, but by believing something have the power of God transform our hearts and lives. And that’s what Paul meant when he says that He died for our sins, that we might be delivered from this present evil world. And if there’s any group of people that ought to be different today, it’s believers, my beloved. We ought not to be conformed to this world that we’re living in today, and we ought not to be as weak-kneed as so many are today.

What does it mean to receive Christ? That’s answered in the Scripture. “To as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become the sons of God, even to (those that do not do any more nor less than just simply) believe on his name.” The only thing God asks you and me to do is to believe on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ—who He is and what He did. And that, my friend, means that the Holy Spirit of God gives us a new nature. And that, my friend, will make you different.

“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him ….” Well, we’ve received Him by faith. We’re to walk by faith. And the Scripture has a great deal to say about walking by faith, walking in newness of life, and walk worthy of the Lord. May I say that all of that depends upon the Holy Spirit. You and I can walk in the flesh, but we can’t walk as believers. It’s only as the Holy Spirit of God energizes us. And it’s only as He comes into our life and the measure that He’s exerting His power and strength, only to that extent are we walking in the Spirit today.

There are three that agree on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood. There are those three will agree. The water speaks of the Holy Spirit, if you please. It speaks of the fact that He cleanses, speaks of the fact that He regenerates, speaks of the fact today that He alone can move in the hearts of men. He alone today can bring power. If we do have any kind of a moving of the Spirit of God in this place, it won’t be because I or the staff have done anything or that you have done something, but it will be because the Holy Spirit of God moves. It’s your business and my business to get into the place where He can move.

I’m convinced that there can be no revival until the sovereign Holy Spirit moves, my beloved. He comes, if you please, from the throne of the Father. And as the Son came to do the Father’s will, the Holy Spirit has come to do the will of the Son. He’ll take the things of Christ and He’ll show them unto us. And He’s come to illuminate the Word of God, therefore. He’s come to interpret it. He’s come to teach us, and He is the Teacher. He’ll never lead in a way that is contrary to the Word of God. The Holy Spirit and the Word will agree. There will be harmony.

I’m wondering today if you have realized the price that was paid for you. 1900 years ago a Savior had to go to the cross and suffer—actually had to go through the very pain of hell—in order that He might purchase your redemption. He’s not accepting anything from any person today for salvation. It’s “to him that worketh not, but believeth on Him that justifieth the ungodly.” Oh, my friend, what a price was paid. We say to you, trust Him and you will be saved. He that “call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” God doesn’t ask you to do anything. He’s done it all for you.

Satan is blinding men. And, even right now, he’s blinding the eyes of some here, saying to you, “You really don’t need Christ. You really don’t need to come as a sinner to Him. You’re smart; you’re clever. You have ability, you’re a good citizen. You’re all right. You don’t need Him.” And Satan blinds you at that one point. Oh, may He lift—tonight, may the Spirit of God lift that blind. May He open your eyes, and may you see this wonderful Savior who can save you from sin.

Satan, he took a third of the angels of heaven with him, they were permitted to make up their own mind. They had a free will and they chose to follow him, declaring themselves independent of God. And today that great conflict is going on, we’re going to see it as it proceeds and even as the Christian today is involved in it. Right and wrong, heaven and hell, God and Satan, light and darkness. And that conflict is going on, will continue until God’s purpose is accomplished. And I don’t propose to know what all God has in mind. But He said one thing: You can trust Him, and He intends to bring this out in the end accordance to His honor and according to His glory.

“Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savor of his knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savor of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one we are the savor of death unto death; and to the other the savor of life unto life.” What he’s saying is this: You and I, when we give out the gospel, it doesn’t make any difference about the reception of it. He always causes us to triumph, because we become “a savor of life unto those that are saved and a savor of death unto those that perish.” Our responsibility is to see that men hear the gospel.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
