Delight in the Word

July 14, 2023

God’s man, “his delight is in the law of the Lord.” And “his delight” means that he finds joy—this Book today is a real delight to read and study. That actually the Word of God is a thrilling book. It’s not a burden. It’s not boring. May I say to you that “his delight is in the law of the Lord.” And, the tragedy that’s come to man—the tear, the sigh, the groaning, the heartache, the heartbreak, the broken homes, the ruined and wrecked lives today—are all, can be explained on this basis: They’re the result of God’s broken law.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

“I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by law, then Christ is dead in vain.” Now the whole thought, I think, is just simply this: That if there’d been any other way to save sinners, then God would have used that method. He would have adopted that method. If a law could’ve been given, or a religion could’ve been given to save sinners, God would have done that. This was the only way that an infinite God could save you and me. And He was willing to make the supreme sacrifice.

He says, “The Son of God who loved me and He gave Himself for me.” He loved me but He just couldn’t love me into heaven. He had to give Himself for me. And the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. And you can only receive a gift by faith. Any gift, for that matter. You’ve got to believe the giver who holds the gift out to you means business and is telling the truth when he holds it out and says, “It’s yours.” And you have to reach out in faith to take it. You don’t know—he may, you know, take it back in a hurry. But you have to have confidence. Now God offers you the gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus.

Now friends we come back here to the second chapter of Galatians and we left off at verse nineteen. Paul says, “For I through law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.” He says, “When Christ died, He died for me, died in my stead, because the Law had condemned me.” Therefore, the Law could not do for me what Christ has done for me. He not only took my place and died for me, but He also did something else. He was able to give me life. He came back from the dead. Only Christ can give you life. And after all, life is what we need today.

My friend, you got the whole ball of wax when you came to Christ. He’s given you everything that you’ll need in this life. And it’s to Christ that we come. He is the One today that administers all the gifts, if you please. Now the Holy Spirit is the One that gives them, but only He’s working down here under the supervision of the second person of the Godhead. The Lord Jesus Christ is the head of the church. My friend, today, we’ve got everything in Him. He is all in all. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He’s the "amen." And when you say "amen," you’re through, my friend. Amen!

God’s not even asking you to live the Christian life. You can’t live it. He’s asking that He might live it through you. But first of all, you have to come to Him as a sinner to be saved. Our churches are filled today with people that are not saved. And you know why? They’ve never come to Christ as a Savior. Oh, they feel like they’ve got something to commit to Him. You haven’t got anything to commit to Him, friends. He wants to commit something to you. He died for you! And He’s on the giving end. He said the “gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus.” And it’s just as simple as this. Have you accepted it? Have you received it?

Did you this morning praise His name when you got up? Did you thank Him for a new day? You say, “Oh it was raining. It was a storm. It was cold or hot or whatever it was, it was a terrible day.” But did you thank Him for it? Praise His name that He brought you to a new day? I had to have a bout with cancer before I came to the place where I now every day—the first thing I do of a morning, I don’t care whether the sun comes or whether it’s pouring down rain, I say, “Lord, thank You for bringing me to a new day.” How wonderful it is. How wonderful it is. We need to praise Him more.

May I say that the gospel today can deliver us from this present evil world. I have literally now thousands of letters from folk who’ve turned to Christ. And He’s delivered them. He’s delivered them from drugs. He’s delivered them from alcohol. He’s delivered them from sex sins. He’s delivered them. And only Christ, my friend, can deliver you in a case like that. He alone can do it. That proves the genuineness of the gospel. He gave Himself and He gave Himself for our sin. And that means He had to take my place. He died in my room, raised again. And He did it that He might deliver us from this present evil world.

What is your attitude today toward the Word of God? My beloved, do you tremble at His Word? Does it have any affect upon you? Does it grip your heart and grip your life? I close now. Action from the Word of God—I come back to our verse. Will you listen to Ezra? “For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, and to do it." And his point was not only to study it, not only to read it, but to do it. The greatest proof of the Bible, my beloved, is to start putting it in action. James, in his practical manner, says, “Be ye doers of the word and not hearers only.”

Now he says, “To the saints and faithful…” Who are the faithful brethren? Well, they are the believing brethren; the saints and believing brethren, they are the same. He’s not talking about two groups of people. And we’re not saints because of what we do, but because of our position. The word means “set apart for God.” To those that are set apart for God and the believing brethren, and they’re the same ones. They’re in Christ, but they’re at Colosse. The important thing is not "where are you at?" but "who are you in?" That is the thing that’s important. It may not be good grammar, but it sure is good Bible.

You see, "with the mouth confession is made, and with the heart man believes." How about it today? He’s not asking you to make any public demonstration when he says “with the mouth.” He says bring the mouth and the heart into harmony. And I wish a lot of church members would do that today. Instead of talking about “I love Jesus and I believe in Jesus,” then get it way down in your heart, so it’ll affect your life and your walk today. If it gets into your heart, the heart will pump it right down into your feet. And you can walk it and live it.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
