Death is conquered

August 2, 2023

Did you know there’s only one man raised in a glorified body today? He’s “the firstfruits of them that sleep.” And so, when you put a loved one that’s in Christ, put that body in the grave, you’re just putting it in a motel—like putting it in a hotel for just a few days. Because there’s coming one bright morning! The body is put to sleep; the individual’s gone to be with the Lord! What a picture we have. And then when He comes to take His church out of this world, then, my friend, that body’s going to be raised. It’s sown in corruption, raised in incorruption! And we receive a new body. Oh, He’s wonderful!

Have you ever stopped to think of the power that’s tied up in this vast physical universe? Who’s holding this thing together? He not only created it, but He holds it together. The Lord Jesus Christ is the one that does this. “…By him all things consist!” And you have that, by the way, again back here in Hebrews 1:3. “Who being the brightness of his glory, the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power—He holds everything together—when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.” He’s a wonderful Person, isn’t He? He’s a glorious Person!

“O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, because His mercy endureth forever.” Let me ask you this morning a very frank question: Do you think God is good? Do you? My friend, since I was operated on I thank Him every day, because I’m living on, you know, sort of borrowed time. I didn’t think I’d make it. And not a day comes around that I don’t say, “O Lord, You’re good to let me see the light of a new day.” He’s good, friends. I don’t know about you, but He’s been good to me. And I’d just like to say with the Psalmist, “God is good.” Do you mind saying “amen”? God is good.

“That I might know Him”—the Lord Jesus—“and the power of His resurrection, the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto his image.” My friend, how well do you know Him today as you come to the table? Do you know anything about the power of His resurrection? Paul prayed for the Ephesians, he said, “That they might know something of that power which wrought in him and brought Him back from the dead.” How we need that today. We need to know something about the power of His resurrection today.

When was the last time that you went to the top of a mountain and watched the sun come up and thanked God for it? When was the last time you walked by the seashore and listened to the sobbing of the waves as they broke? Or that you stopped out on the desert and saw that long vista and you thanked Him for it? He is the Creator. And even in a world that has been tinctured and touched by sin, there’s still beauty in His creation. “And the heavens still declare the glory of God and His firmament showeth the handiwork.”

We today have made the Lord’s Supper a very morbid affair. I wish we had more joy in this service. This ought to be a service of informality and great joy. That was the way that it was intended to be. You can be reverent without being long-faced. I hope our officers, when they come down this morning, will smile. We’re not looking at someone on a cross this morning. He’s gone! He’s at God’s right hand, and He’d like for us to enjoy this supper today. I hope you’ll enjoy it today.

If you have enough faith to just come to Jesus Christ and say, “I’ll take You as my Savior. I’ve got a lot of questions.” Paul says to the Colossians, “I’m praying that you are going now to be filled with the knowledge….” Epignōsin—that means “super knowledge.” That’s the kind of knowledge that after you come to Christ, these things then are made real to you. You know, faith is not a leap in the dark. Faith rests upon real knowledge. And any man that has faith enough just to reach out and take Christ as Savior, the Spirit of God makes these things real to him.

“When the Queen of Sheba heard….” That’s all. She heard. May I say to you that that’s all God asks any person to do—is to hear and then believe. You see, “Faith cometh by hearing; hearing by the Word of God.” The gospel is something that you have to hear. And then you have to make your decision of whether you believe God or not. “When the Queen of Sheba heard.” That’s all. She heard and she acted on what she heard. And, my friend, that’s the place where God will meet you, and that’s the only place He’ll meet you. You have to hear.

As I came today to this study, I’m as helpless as anyone out yonder listening to this broadcast who has just accepted Christ as your Savior. The same Spirit of God that I believe is leading me and teaching me, He can teach you! And He’s brought you, if you are His child, He’s brought you into the position of a full-grown son, into the adoption. And my friend, there’s nothing quite as a wonderful as that. May I say to you, to know today that the Spirit of God will lead you and guide you into all truth, if you just want to know it, if you’re willing for Him to be your teacher.

And I believe that before God, He sees our hearts. He knows whether we’ve trusted Christ or not. And friends, He knows whether you’re genuine or not. And for that reason, I like to say to church members today, “Then why don’t you be genuine?” He knows whether you are or not. You can fool the people in the church. You can fool your neighbors. You can put up a pious front. But why not be real and have a lot of fun in it all? And you don’t have to put on. You can be real and trust Christ as your Savior. And that is the thing that’s so important. And that will produce works—a living, dynamic faith will do that.

The man without God today, without Christ as his Savior, he can’t stand in his own merit before God. If I may make this as simple as I know how to make it: You and I today are sinners. “All have sinned….” And you and I can’t remove our sin. There’s nothing we can do that will remove it. But this morning there are two places for your sin. He bore our sin upon the cross. He was made sin for us. And this morning either your sin is on Christ, and you will never have to come into judgment; or your sin is on you, and you have to be judged.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
