Are you thirsty?

September 13, 2024

Perilous times are coming, and these things that are in the world seep into the hearts of Christians today. And how are you going to overcome? The remedy is here. There is no shortcut of taking four or five verses. Well, somebody says, “I was brought up in a Christian home, and my mother led me when I was a very little fellow, led me to know the Lord Jesus.” I say to you this morning that’s important! That is the thing that must come first. Does the Word of God deliver you? Have you found this Book working in your life? “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.” Are you thirsty? Are you thirsty?

Galatians Bible Companion

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

He speaks through the book today. And if you want His companionship and His fellowship today, you’ll have to get it through His Word. And then there’s something else that you must have, or you’ll never complete the journey. We need today hope—oh, we need hope that tomorrow will be brighter. We need hope that at the end of this journey there is satisfaction and the fullness of life. Peter wrote and says, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and with fear.” You’ll find in this book, my friend, all that you need.

We need protection on a journey. This is a dangerous journey. Paul said perilous times would come. And we need a defense. And “take … the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” “The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword ….” And then there’s other things that we need. In fact, it’s all here. We need a first-aid kit. Are you wounded today? Are you broken hearted? Are you disappointed? May I say that this book is a first-aid kit. It has in it the balm of Gilead to bind up the broken hearted. And it’s the only remedy that you’ll find.

Life is a journey for a Christian. We’re pilgrims in a foreign land. What does a traveler need for a journey? The kind we are making? May I say this to you—you and I need a road map. We need a guide. We need a chart and a compass. We need something to point the way. This book here is that. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Either that’s true or it’s not true. You and I today as we travel through this life, one of the things you need on a journey is light in the darkness. “The entrance of thy words giveth light ….” This book is the only flashlight God has for you.

The Word of God today is that which contains the medicine that you and I need for this hour. You and I need to recognize that you must take all of the pills. I called my doctor; he gave me a prescription. And I said to him; I said, “I’m not any better.” He said to me, “Did you take all of the pills?” Well, I said, “I’ve got four or five left.” He said, “You take every one of them.” That’s the trouble today, is that we’ve got folks that are trying to take a part of the prescription. They have devotions, reading a few verses of Scripture, and thinking they’re taking God’s medicine. My beloved, you’ve got to get into the Book.

“Every Scripture is given by inspiration of God ….” Every one of these words are God’s words to you and me today. Now he’s saying this. That the Word of God—will you listen to me carefully? This book is the bottle that contains the prescription for salvation today, to live for God today. And, my friend, when I say that I’m prepared to say something else: There is no other place that you can get a remedy except here. Now you don’t take all the pills at one time. Not even the “gos-pill,” if you please. My, what a bad pun. But you don’t take all of them at one time.

Our God is holy. We can’t sin and get by with it. If you can, then God is no better than you are. And man is but a creature. God’s will will prevail. Our proper position is to bow before Him. And my only liberty today is in the will of God. He remembers we are dust. But I can say with Paul, “I obtained mercy.” My friend, if you defy Him, He’ll trample you under His feet, but He’ll love you. And He loves you! And the day is coming “when they will not offend in my holy mountain, saith the Lord.” He’s running everything, friends. Not man.

“I will put my spirit within you, cause you to walk in my statutes ….” Now that’s what Joel meant in his prophecy. There’s a day coming when God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh—not some. Very few on the Day of Pentecost. All Peter said that day was, he says, “Don’t ridicule this, brethren and say they’re drunk.” This is like what Joel says is going to come in the last days. “And the Spirit is come upon a few.” And today God’s calling out a people to His name. The minute that you turn to Christ, you’re regenerated by the Holy Spirit, you’re indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and baptized by the Holy Spirit, put in the body of believers.

“I will seek that which was lost ….” This is the Shepherd that when He got sheep lost, He goes out after it. And for the nation Israel, He’ll do that. For the church today, that’s what He says of the church today. And there was a shepherd that had 100 sheep; one sheep got lost. What did He do? Forget it and say, “Well, man, if the little fellow wants to run off. After all, 99 sheep—that’s a pretty good number to come through with.” But this Shepherd says, “I started out with 100, I’m going to come through with 100. Vernon McGee’s going to be there.” Not because he’s a smart sheep, because sheep are stupid. He’s going to be there because I’ve got a wonderful Shepherd. And He says, “I will, I will. I will!” And again, and again!

I don’t care who you are, you’re going to stand before God. Now if you’re a child of God, He’ll judge you for your sin. You won’t lose your salvation, but He’ll take you to the woodshed. Now if you’re a lost man, you’ve got no claim on God at all. He doesn’t say He won’t hear the prayer of the wicked. He just says He hears the prayers of the righteous, and He’s not obligated to hear the others. But if that wicked man would cry out to Him, God would deliver him. When you hear people today say, “Why does God let this happen?” and they’re unsaved—well, my friend, you have no claim on God. God’s righteous, and we forget that this happens to be His world.

And my friend, today, you and I are sinners, can’t rush into the presence of God. He loves us. He doesn’t save us by love; He saves us by grace. Because He can’t put it on a merit basis—you and I’d miss out altogether. But He has put it on the basis that His Son died for us. He did that because He loved us, but by grace He reaches down and says, “I’ll save you.” But He also says, “You’re lost. You shall not perish if you believe on the Son.” What’s the alternative? Well, you are going to perish if you don’t believe on the Son. It’s just that simple.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
