Reviving the Forgotten Practice of Christian Hospitality

September 17, 2016
Last week on the program, Rosaria Butterfield shared her amazing journey to faith in Christ from being a lesbian activist professor of women’s studies specializing in queer theory at Syracuse University. You can read Rosaria’s story in her book, The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert. The means God used to bring Rosaria to saving faith was through the hospitality of a local pastor named Ken Smith and his wife Floy. Ken wrote a letter to Rosaria about an op-ed she had written in the local paper criticizing Promise Keepers. Ken’s letter started a conversation with Rosaria, and soon the Smiths were inviting Rosaria into their home for meals, conversations … sharing the gospel...

When Culture Hates You by Natasha Crain

As cultural hostility toward Christianity intensifies, many Christians have grown more reluctant to advocate for biblical values in the public square. But our perseverance for the common good—a good defined by God alone—is more important than ever in a culture that embraces darkness.

There’s no bridge too far. This is David Wheaton, host of The Christian Worldview. The Bible says the unbeliever is “dead in trespasses and sins” and thus every conversion to new life in Christ is a supernatural work of God. And yet some conversions seem quite unlikely. Take Rosaria Butterfield. She was a lesbian academic, specializing in queer theory … and then she came to faith in Christ...

The Bible says the unbeliever is “dead in trespasses and sins” and thus every conversion to new life in Christ is a miracle of God. And yet some conversions seem far more unlikely. Take Rosaria Butterfield, our guest this weekend on The Christian Worldview. She was a liberal college professor of women’s studies and a lesbian activist … and then she came to faith in Christ...

Have you heard about the Hebrew Roots movement? This is David Wheaton, host of The Christian Worldview. Those in the Hebrew Roots movement believe the church has lost the authentic Jewishness of early Christianity and that a deeper Christian walk is found in adhering to Old Testament Torah laws. Christians are free to observe Jewish laws. BUT, Scripture is clear that you are not saved or sanctified by doing so. And that we should not place our preferences as an obligation for anyone else...

Jesus and the majority of the early church were Jewish. They followed many of the Jewish religious laws and customs of their day, including temple worship and Jewish feasts. So if Jesus and the early church adhered to Jewish customs and laws, shouldn’t we? Those in the Hebrew Roots movement certainly think so. They believe the modern church has lost the authentic Jewishness of early Christianity and that a deeper Christian walk is found in adhering to Old Testament Torah laws, even beyond the moral law to the civil and ceremonial laws...

So what about church leadership conferences? This is David Wheaton, host of The Christian Worldview. Some of the most well-known pastors and churches in America stage leadership conferences which are simulcast to hundreds of churches, reaching hundreds of thousands of people. The implicit message is, “We have a successful leadership model that impacts tens of thousands at multiple locations. Come and learn our best practices so you can do the same in your church.” ...

“Leadership” is the latest trend in the American evangelical church. Influential pastors such as Bill Hybels of Willow Creek in Chicago and Andy Stanley of North Point Ministries in Atlanta stage conferences that are simulcast to hundreds of churches across the country, reaching hundreds of thousands of people. In the case of the Global Leadership Summit hosted by Hybels, an unusual mix of speakers fills the lineup: from Bishop T.D. Jakes to Melinda Gates to various other “successful” businesspersons, entrepreneurs, and visionaries...

Wikipedia defines a parachurch as a “Christian faith-based organization that works outside and across denominations to engage in social welfare and evangelism, usually independent of church oversight.” Examples of parachurch organizations are numerous, such as Focus on the Family, World Vision, Samaritan’s Purse, Youth with a Mission, and Bible Study Fellowship...

Discerning Christians know that our society is going through a major change right now, transitioning from a generally respectful view of God, the Bible, and Christians to marginalization or even hostility toward Christians. What impact will this new America have on the local church, or for the purposes of our discussion this weekend, the parachurch?...

Are atheists deluded? The short answer is, yes. Or as Psalm 14 puts it, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” In Ray Comfort’s new documentary film, The Atheist Delusion, he establishes that the overwhelming evidence for God is beyond a reasonable doubt. No one thinks a book is made without an author, so why would anyone conclude the vastly more complex instruction book of life—our DNA—does not have an intelligent author—God?...

Over the last half century, atheism, the belief that God doesn’t exist, along with its bedfellows naturalism and secularism, have become prominent in our society, especially in academia and science. So much so that atheists often criticize Christianity and Christians strongly and condescendingly, shaking the faith of some. But to be very clear, God’s Word states in Psalm 14, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” Although no one can prove the existence or non-existence of God through observable and reproducible scientific testing...
