Music and the Christian

June 4, 2016
The style of music that an evangelical church features in its worship service is arguably the most important consideration for someone to attend. In fact, many churches offer multiple types of services—traditional, contemporary, blended—mostly to appeal to congregants’ musical preferences. This is ironic, considering Scripture does not mention music as a significant aspect of 1st Century church services, whereas today up to half or more of a typical church service is music...

When Culture Hates You by Natasha Crain

As cultural hostility toward Christianity intensifies, many Christians have grown more reluctant to advocate for biblical values in the public square. But our perseverance for the common good—a good defined by God alone—is more important than ever in a culture that embraces darkness.

How do we reconcile God’s sovereignty with our ability to make choices? This is David Wheaton, host of The Christian Worldview. All throughout the Bible, we see that God is in perfect control. He either causes or allows everything that happens. He is sovereign. And yet we also read that we are to choose good and refuse sin...

The sovereignty of God could be defined as God’s rule or control over everything in the universe. In other words, God knows all and causes or allows everything that happens. Wrapping our finite minds around that is hard enough, but now add that God has created us with the ability to make meaningful choices in a world over which He is sovereign...

Should hell be discussed? This is David Wheaton, host of The Christian Worldview. One of the most disturbing passages in Scripture is when Jesus tells the story of the rich man who has died and is pleading for relief in hell. The man says: Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame. According to Jesus, hell is a real place, where those who reject God’s offer of forgiveness through Jesus Christ consciously suffer God’s wrath forever...

One of the more disturbing passages in all of Scripture is when Jesus, in Luke 16, tells in vivid detail the story of a rich man who dies and is in agony in hell. According to Jesus and many other passages in Scripture (e.g. 2 Thes. 1:9, Rev. 21:8) hell is an incomprehensibly terrible and real place, where those who reject God’s offer of forgiveness through Jesus Christ will consciously suffer God’s wrath … forever.

Why is understanding original sin so important? This is David Wheaton, host of The Christian Worldview. The Bible says, For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. The first man’s, Adam’s sin, is the reason why murder, corruption, racism, sex trafficking,, disease and death are everywhere. It’s why President Obama just decreed that all public schools must allow boys who feel like girls to use the girls’ bathroom...

Whether one calls it “original sin” or “the fall of man”, it is a crucial doctrine for understanding the world around us, and more importantly, our own nature and need for redemption. Almost everyone would agree that “nobody’s perfect” but most believe that man is inherently good and the concept of original sin is more fiction than fact...

Are you discipling your grandchildren? This is David Wheaton, host of The Christian Worldview. While the primary role of raising children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord is for parents, grandparents should play an important part as well. The apostle Paul said to Timothy, “I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. (2 Timothy 1:5)...

This Mother’s Day weekend, we are going to discuss how grandmothers (and grandfathers) can do the eternally important work of discipling their grandchildren, even amongst the many challenges, such as: Family Conflict: The adult children of grandparents may not be walking with the Lord or there may be relational conflict. Or perhaps the son or daughter has married someone who doesn’t want his/her spouse’s parents to influence the kids. Distance: Grandchildren may live far away, limiting the time spent together in person to once or twice a year...

Why are the people’s devising a vain thing and what is God doing about it? Biblical Christians understand that things are greatly awry in the world: oppression and violence, sex trafficking, racial animosity, hundreds of millions of aborted babies, marriage redefined, and transgenderism affirmed. The nations are in an uproar and the peoples are devising a vain thing as the first verse of Psalm 2 says, but...

As our culture has become increasingly secular over the past few decades, evangelical church leaders have adapted their services to attract especially a younger generation that hasn’t been exposed to traditional biblical Christianity. Verse by verse preaching has been replaced with messages on felt needs and a traditional order of worship, that included staples such as Bible reading and hymn singing, has been “updated” with worship bands, dramas, mood lighting, and all manner of other methods to create a multi-sensory “worship experience”...
