GUEST: BRUCE WHEATON, father of host David WheatonThis Father’s Day weekend, we are going to go back in time to 2010 to hear an interview with my own father, Bruce Wheaton.Many of you know that God welcomed my dad into heaven February 1, 2023 at age 91. Our family has joy that he is in the eternal presence of the Savior he believed, loved, and obeyed. But we miss his presence with us tremendously, for he was a beloved husband, father, and friend to not just the members of his family but to many others as well.My mom, who is 90, misses my dad most of all, which is understandable, considering they met when she was 15 and he 17 and were married for nearly 70 years. But God has given her a strong faith and a loving family to surround and help her. Her family, my siblings and grandkids, was taught and influenced greatly by my dad. So he is still strongly felt.Proverbs 20:7 says, “A righteous man who walks in his integrity—How blessed are his sons after him.” That is the certainly the case with my siblings and me.For many years, probably more than 15, my dad and/or my mom were guests on the program either on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. It seemed normal to me to talk to my dad about various issues because that’s what we did as a family in the regular course of life. The sad irony is that men and fathers are often blamed, marginalized, and vilified for the ills in our society. The worldview behind the resentment of men is one that rejects God’s design for male leadership, particularly in the home and church.For their part, too many men have allowed themselves to become feminized and passive in the way they think, act, and dress. God promises to save all who call on Him (Romans 10:13) and to set apart for His use all who humble themselves before Him (1 Peter 5:6).In His inspired, inerrant, infallible, immutable, and authoritative Word, God provides the truth men need. Guest: Tom Ascol, Senior Pastor, Grace Baptist Church (Cape Coral, FL)The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is the largest Protestant church denomination in North America, with six seminaries, 47,000 churches, 13 million church members, and entities like the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), Lifeway Christian Resources, the North American Mission Board (NAMB), and more.Some of the most influential churches and pastors in America are part of the SBC. SBC churches are expected to give to the Cooperative Program (CP), which uses the funds for all their various entities and endeavors. In 2023, the CP budget was nearly $200M.Any organization this size with this much influence and funding is going to be a battlefield of agendas. The SBC was once moving to the left theologically but made a “conservative resurgence” in the 1980s. In recent years, the SBC has becoming wobbly on issues related to social justice, Critical Race Theory, female pastors, and more.At stake at this year’s upcoming SBC Annual Meeting June 9-12 in Indianapolis is a proposed amendment to the SBC constitution, called the “Law Amendment” (named after Mike Law, the VA pastor who submitted it), that SBC cooperating churches do “not affirm, appoint, or employ a woman as a pastor of any kind.”Many SBC churches currently do employ female pastors in clear violation of God’s Word that only men of high character be pastors and elders. A headlong descent into depravity straight out of Romans 1: “And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil;” Romans 1:28-29Robert Knight, The Washington Times columnist and our guest this weekend, writes in his latest column that “More than 80,000 men claim they were sexually abused when they were in the Boy Scouts…and this past March agreed to a $2.4 billion settlement to pay thousands of claims.”The sane response to this horrific abuse would be to greatly strengthen protocol for Scout leaders’ interaction with boys. Instead, the Boy Scouts approved homosexual men to be leaders of boys.The Boy Scouts were once a respected organization that trained boys to be men, in character, in skills, in service. The Scout oath was and still is (but now in lip service only)…“On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”What went wrong with the Boy Scouts that has also gone wrong in broader American society? How can the church and Christian organizations avoid being lured into this deconstruction? In fact, Owen Strachan, author of a book by that title was interviewed on The Christian Worldview on Nov. 18, 2023.Owen described how our society seeks to emasculate men in order to stamp out what they call “toxic masculinity”. At a more fundamental level, what animates this war is a rejection of God and his design and role for men. Instead of being the leaders, cultivators, and protectors God designed, men become passive, weak, and cowardly.The way back from this morass isn’t as superficial as an in-your-face dressing-down by a drill sergeant or calls from the social media “manosphere” to “man up”.
