April 28, 2020

“Don’t put your head on the pillow at night if you hadn’t had your nose in the Book during the day.” —Stuart Briscoe

In addition to recognizing the significance of congregational worship, it’s important for believers to develop the practice of personal daily devotions.

Have you ever lost a loved one? It is an incredibly painful experience. However, those of us who are believers in Christ have hope. When the Lord returns, “the dead will rise first, and then we will be caught up in the air with them.” The Apostle Paul wrote this as a word of encouragement to those who grieve the loss of those we love.

Do you have trouble finding a church you feel is the right fit for you? If so, Pete suggests that we need a paradigm shift in our thinking of the church. The church was not meant to be a place where we come to get our needs met. Instead, we should realize that we ourselves are the church. Romans 12 explains that God made each one of us with unique gifts, and each one of these gifts is needed to make the church function as God intended it to. If one part is lacking, the church can survive for a time but will put too much strain on the rest and become weak again.

The world is full of distractions that will take us places we never intended to go, and Satan is lurking around the corner trying to deceive us with false beliefs. One of those beliefs has been the concept that Jesus, in addition to religious philosophy, traditions, and principles, is what grants us salvation. Pete Briscoe uses Colossians 2 to shine some light on the truth that Christ alone has made it possible for us to be cleansed and seen blameless in God’s sight.

Do you want deep, authentic relationships with people? If you do, perhaps a paradigm shift needs to happen in your thinking. The world tells us to make a name for ourselves and to do it at whatever the cost. The problem is along the way we step on others and damage relationships. In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches from Philippians 2 where the apostle Paul shows us how to think counter-culturally so that we can experience deep and meaningful relationships with others.

Is there someone in your life who has deeply hurt you? We can come up with a list of excuses as to why we cannot or will not forgive that person, but the reality is that unforgiveness in our hearts is only hurting us. That pain will leak into other areas of our lives, and we will end up hurting loved ones in the process. Pete Briscoe teaches in the book of Philemon on why we should reconcile with each other and how we can go about doing it so that we have a better understanding of everything good we have in Christ, which leads to a fuller experience.

On earth, we are guaranteed to be worn out, discouraged, and deal with sickness. However, God wants to encourage us because our story, in Him, does not end in despair. By calling on Him, we have the authority to overcome the tough times in life, and see that Christ brings new life to situations that seem hopeless.

Have you ever received a gift you didn’t deserve? This is exactly what happens at the judgment seat of Christ. The Bible is filled with hints of what this event might be like for us. Jill discusses a couple of them for us to try and paint us a picture. Not only do we receive the gift of dwelling in heaven when Christ died on the cross for us, we also get rewarded for the things that Christ did through us while we were on earth.

We have the free will to make our own choices in life. These choices set the path for our earthly existence and, ultimately, our eternal existence. But there is a coming day when we will stand at the great white throne of God and deal with the consequences of the most important choice we had to make on earth. Jill talks through several verses in the Bible explaining the ramifications of the decision to trust Jesus Christ as our Savior, or not. This message includes Jill reading her poem, “Judge Jesus.”

Do you have friends and family who have not yet accepted the Lord? Knowing that our time on earth could end at any moment, are you worried about them spending eternity in the outer darkness called hell? Jill insists that if hell is a real existence and there’s a possibility that our unbelieving loved ones may end up there, it is a crucial matter to discuss. She dives into this controversial topic: Is there a second chance to accept Christ after death?
