If There's a Heaven, There's a Hell, Part 2

September 6, 2024

here were many false teachers in these days, and one of the things they were saying is that there's no need to worry about a final judgment. But that's just wrong! If we believe there's no final judgment, then it really doesn't matter what we do. If it doesn't matter what we do, then we can spend our life raising "hell." We can just go out and have a wild time! We can do everything that our lower nature longs to do—no restraints, no limits, no consequences, and no accountability. That's just not true, as Peter points out in this passage, 2 Peter 2:1-9

In Peter’s day, the Old Testament Scriptures and the apostles’ teachings were being twisted, fundamental truths ridiculed, and biblical morality repudiated. So he reminded the people of the significance of God’s Word. We need the reminder, too, for we live in similar days.

In the epistle he wrote shortly before his death, the Apostle Peter strongly emphasized the important things in life they must not forget. We need to remember not to forget them, too.

Human history is all about oppression and liberation, tyranny and emancipation. It is also about the abuse of freedom and confusion about liberty. Peter addressed the issue, talking about being “slaves of depravity” and “a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.”

When the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, we receive all of Him into all of us. But did you know that we can abuse Him? He is abused when we suppress Him, quench Him, or subdue Him. Limiting Him to only certain areas of our lives is considered abuse… and a sin.

In the Scriptures, oil is used as a symbol of joy and gladness. And we as Christians have a little pot of oil in us that will never run dry. The Holy Spirit is the oil in our lamps that keeps us burning, allowing us to be a light in this dark world.

Jesus said it was better that He leave earth so the Holy Spirit could come. He was one body amongst the people, but the Spirit would come to live inside of us. The Holy Spirit acts as a Fire that sets our souls ablaze and gives us the power to do things that are beyond our own strength.

God’s will, God’s Word, and God’s worship may sound a little spiritual to some people. But Paul is extremely practical when he turns his attention to “whatever you do.” That just about covers everything!

About Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Stuart Briscoe uses wit and intellect to target your heart, capture your attention and challenge you to grow! You will find his logic compelling as he brings a fresh, practical perspective to the Scriptures. Born in England, Stuart left a career in banking to enter the ministry full time. He has written more than 50 books, received three honorary doctorates and preached in more than one hundred countries. He was senior pastor of Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, for thirty years, and currently serves as minister-at-large.

Jill Briscoe was born in England and found Christ when she was 18 years old. She never looked back. Upon graduating from Cambridge University, she began working as a teacher by day and had a vigorous street ministry to the youths of Liverpool by night.

She met Stuart at a youth conference and they married in 1958. In the 50 years since, Jill has become a highly sought-after Bible teacher and author who travels around the world ministering to under-resourced churches and speaking at international seminars and conferences. Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
