Flirting with the World

February 4, 2020

Why is the world such a dangerous place for Christians? Because worldly pleasures are developed by the evil one for the purpose of drawing you away from Jesus.

Just like a true friend would warn you of impending danger, John cautions us in 1 John about the danger of being seduced by worldly things that are not from God but are from Satan—things that pull us away from Jesus and into harmful circumstances.

In this message, Pete Briscoe shows us what’s at stake when we maintain a flirtatious relationship with worldly things.

Is there ever a check in your spirit about whether you’re really a Christian? Studied out of context, 1 John 2:3, which mentions obeying commands, can read more like a warning to believers and cause us to doubt if we’re really children of God. But in reality, John brings to light in his letter the most beautiful and magnificent truth about the new command that Jesus wants us to focus on. In this message, Pete Briscoe uses John’s letter to lift the burden of doubt we might carry about our salvation. And at the same time, teaches us about Jesus’ design for love that is counterintuitive to how we love on our own.

People become remarkably imaginative about God.  But Scripture says, “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, neither has entered into the heart of man what God has prepared for those who love Him, but God has revealed them to us by His Spirit.” Not speculation, not imagination – but revelation. God is in the business of self-revelation, which is a fundamental tenant of Christianity. He has made human beings uniquely capable of receiving what He is revealing. And more than that, He has given us the ability of responding to what we are receiving.   He reveals himself, first of all, in creation. Secondly, He reveals himself in covenant, and thirdly, He reveals himself in Christ. This is how we go about discovering what God is really like.

Jesus left simple and clear instructions for all believers who have received the Holy Spirit. Be a witness—tell people about Me, tell them about the cross, tell them how I’ve transformed your life. That’s the passionate witnessing we see the disciples doing in Acts after they received the Holy Spirit. Do you see this in your life—in your church? In this message Pete Briscoe reminds us where our priorities lie as the church of Christ and challenges each of us to make a difference in our homes, at work, in our communities and in our relationships by living out what Jesus asks of us: to be My witnesses.

Splinters, thorns, prickers. It doesn’t matter what they are called, they hurt and get under your skin! Life in our world is filled with thorns: difficult relationships, illness, loss of loved ones, broken promises. The Bible tells us that even the Apostle Paul and God Himself in Jesus struggled under the bite of thorns. But God does not allow thorns in our lives without providing sufficient grace to live in the prickly mess. What Satan intends to push us down often results in pushing us to our knees in front of God’s throne instead.  “You who wore my thorns that I may know Your grace...pierced by my sin that I may see Your face...loved and forgiven from shame and deep disgrace. You wore my thorns. You wore my thorns.” (from Jill’s poem “You Wore My Thorns” copyright 2003)

Why is a walk in a garden so relaxing? Because we were created to live in God’s garden of perfection, forever. Unfortunately, as the story goes, Adam and Eve made a fatal error and were forced to make their home in the garden of sin instead, where nothing is perfect or peaceful.  But remember, this is God’s story! God came looking for Adam and Eve after they disobeyed. And in His grace, He still comes looking for us today. Jill Briscoe takes us through biblical examples of God’s saving grace and how He offers us a way to His riches through Christ.

And as you step out in obedience—by the power of the Spirit—you’ll experience the richness and fullness of the life God has for you.
