And I know that whatever God does is final. Nothing can be added to it or taken from it. God’s purpose in this is that people should fear him. - Ecclesiastes 3:14

God made man, and as Derek Kidner said in his book A Time to Mourn and a Time to Dance, “God has no abortive enterprises or forgotten men!”

God did not make the world, throw it into space, and then wonder where it went and what was happening to it. “Whatever God does is final”! What’s more, “Nothing can be added to it.”

People, however bright, cannot possibly create another world just like the present one. Whatever we can do —even of considerable value, wrought with in-credible ingenuity—can never “be final” or eternal if we believe only in the now. If we are earthbound in mind and spirit, we cannot comprehend a God who foreknows all and overlooks nothing.

The frustration and emptiness of doing things that are only for now must lead some honest people to ask questions. What joy to tell the seeker that whatever God does is final and lasts forever.

He forgives me—that’s final and it lasts forever. He will not suddenly change his mind. He loves me forever, and he changes me forever, refusing to let me jettison my preparation for life in another dimension. He gives me family who are forever: a forever husband, two forever sons, and a forever daughter. He sends me forever friends and helps me engage in forever pursuits.

Final and forever have already forgotten now. They linger for eternity; their joys expand, filling the universe, singing a hymn.
