He Comforts Me

When trials and suffering come, where do we turn? We ought to turn to God, the God of all comfort. Suffering in this life is inevitable. David knew that. He wrote his psalms about that. But he wrote with the knowledge that God’s love brings comfort, encouragement, freshness, and life to those who pant after Him.

In this message, Jill points us to the many resources for encouragement that God has already given us: His Holy Spirit, His word, and His people. God aks us to bring encouragement to those around us.

When man makes promises, he rarely follows through. God, on the other hand, can make promises the size of eternity, and He always follows through! God promised David that He would give him a throne that would never pass away. God promised to bring a new covenant to His people through David’s line, a covenant that would bring an eternity where there are no broken promises.  In this message, we learn of God’s faithfulness in His grand promises. We can trust His promises because they are based on His unfailing love!

We have all experienced the feeling of spiritual oppression, temptation, or threats. But when David faced Goliath, God was the champion. God fought for the one He loved, just as He will fight for us when we're overwhelmed, because He loves us.  In this message, Jill teaches us that God is our rescuer. That doesn't mean He will always rescue us from physical hardships or discomfort, but He will rescue us from sin, and its consequences. He will rescue us from Satan's schemes, from fear, and from ourselves.

It’s easy for us to question God when He chooses us for a task. We feel unqualified, like God has made a mistake. But God often chooses the unexpected to do His work. David was the definition of unexpected. He was the youngest, the smallest shepherd boy, but he was chosen by God to be king.  In this message, Jill shows us that all of us have been anointed and given the ability to receive a calling and equipping from God.

Our mere existence is evidence of God's love. When God creates, He creates in love and with purpose. He knows our days, our actions, our thoughts, before we even begin to exist.  In this message, Jill Briscoe reminds us that our reaction to God's love for us, as displayed in our creation, ought to be like David's in the psalms—a reaction of praise and obedience.

How are you pouring into those younger than yourself?  What kind of legacy are you building to leave for your children?  Jill Briscoe takes us to Proverbs 31:1-9 to ponder the words King Lemuel wrote fondly about his mother and the faith she passed along to him.  Whatever age or stage we’re at, God calls us to be a blessing to the next generation.  The gifts God has given us never age, and they’re supposed to be used.  Jill encourages us to start loving, teaching, and praying for the younger ones coming along.  The impact will be not only on the next generation, but for eternity!

God will use you, no matter how broken you are, if you are obedient. This is the lesson we can learn from the book of Esther. Esther started as a simple Jewish girl. But God asked her to be obedient, and she ended up risking her life to go before the king and make a request that her people be saved. She went with the knowledge that she would most likely be killed. But Esther had faith and was obedient.

Most of us like to put our roots down and feel secure. We don't like change. We don't like being pushed into situations where we'll risk anything. But sometimes God calls us to do this! God calls us to be believers, like Esther and Mordecai, who care enough about the souls of others that we risk our own comfort, and sometimes our own lives, in order to fight for the lives of those around us. Jill teaches us how to be believers who care enough to dare—believers with courage to do the right thing even when we're afraid!

Upholding the "Christian" label in a world like ours is vulnerable—it’s risky. If we live rightly in our wrong world, sooner or later we will find ourselves in conflict or threatened. When Esther's people, the Jews, were threatened, she had to choose whether or not she was going to stand up for them against the persecution of Haman. Would she keep her identity as a Jew a secret and save herself? Or would she stick her neck out and try to save the Jews? Jill encourages us to be like Esther, and to be unashamed of the Gospel message in our witness.

Have you experienced a darkening sky in your life? When you find yourself there, do you shine brighter for it, or flicker out? Esther's life seemed to be a downward spiral of difficulties. But she continued to shine brightly for God in the unbelieving kingdom of which she was now queen. As Jill takes you through the amazing story of Esther, a simple Jewish girl made queen, you will see that you, too, can be empowered by God to keep shining his light, even in an ever darkening sky.

Sometimes God's will isn't what we would have picked out for ourselves. It isn't what we want. And it's difficult to accept. Esther's life didn't turn out how she wanted it to. She found herself separated from her family and married to the unbelieving King of Persia. Through these trials, God made Esther into a Supernova, shining even more brightly in the hardships. But before she could get there, she had to die to her own dreams and her own plan. Are you willing to do the same?
