Are You Good Soil?

January 25, 2022

The fields are ready—people are dry and waiting to hear a message of hope, meaning and purpose of life. The seed, the Word of God, is dynamic, powerful, precious and full of life. God calls those in His kingdom to share this good news. Like a farmer sowing seed, we are to be spiritual farmers generously spreading God's truth.

But why is it so hard to share our faith? Is it that we’re waiting for perfect weather before risking to go out in the fields? Or are we not seeing the lost the way God does? Are we not aware there’s an enemy circling us, seeking to thwart our plans and snatch the seed?

With attention-grabbing stories and personal insight, Jill teaches in this single message to focus on being good soil—taking God’s truth and with His watering, producing a spiritual harvest for His kingdom.

Security comes with the confidence of knowing who you are and where you belong. In Ecclesiastes 4, we see Solomon mourning for the lost outside his palace gates as he watches them toil with the meaningless distractions of this world. Today, there are still millions of people walking around with the emptiness of not knowing God. And as this breaks the Lord's heart, it should move us to take action in sharing the Gospel.

If we are honest with ourselves, instant gratification is the driving force for many of our actions. But that pleasure soon fades. Jill brings us to Ecclesiastes 2 where Solomon puts this theory to the test in an effort to see what truly satisfies.

When you can't feel God with your feelings, feel Him with your faith. There are plenty of times in life when we feel like God isn't with us because we are focused on our emotions. These are the times when it is crucial to speak Scripture over our circumstances. Then we will find ourselves being lifted out of the pit.

In a world filled with "me-first" thinking, it’s natural to wonder if we matter to anyone. Who really cares about me? In Ecclesiastes 4, we get to see Solomon’s longing for significance in another’s life, which ultimately can only be satisfied by God. In this message, Jill uses an acrostic for W-I-S-D-O-M.

Why are we here? Is there a purpose? We have a need to know the meaning of life because God has put eternity in the hearts of man. Jill leads us to various chapters in Ecclesiastes to help us make sense of it all.

Have you tried to carry all of your groceries into the house in one trip so you didn't have to go back out to the car? Your arms are aching, the bags are pinching your fingers, and the food is beginning to slide out. But you keep moving, hoping to get everything into the kitchen before the bags break! Now imagine that someone in your family came out as you were unloading your bags and offered to carry them so you could sit down to rest. You probably wouldn't turn them down! Well, Jesus has made this offer—He wants to carry our burdens. We just need to say yes. In Matthew 11:28-29, Jesus says:  "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

One of the best known passages in the Bible is Psalm 23. It describes the relationship between a shepherd and His flock, in which He guides them through pastures, hills and dark valleys. In every case, the sheep are content because the shepherd is there, offering protection and comfort. We are the sheep in this story! Jill teaches that no matter what is happening in our lives, good or bad, the only way we can find true contentment—and even joy—in every situation is by trusting in the Lord, our shepherd, who promises to never leave us.

Do you believe that some sin is too big for God to forgive? Do you wonder if someone who has sinned can be restored and renewed? Can God use them again? Can God use you again?  Be comforted. There is "life after sin," as Jill Briscoe shows us by exploring the life of David. In Psalm 51, David writes about turning around and running into the arms of the loving, merciful, compassionate God who was waiting for him, waiting to take him back. Do you need to turn and run in to the arms of God? He's waiting for you, too.

Giant Temptation comes to all of us. All of us know him. He knows us—he knows when our guard is up, and he knows when we’re feeling lazy. It’s in our times of laziness that we’re faced with temptations that we’re not prepared for, and we, like David, have to choose whether to go along with the giant of temptation or to get off the rooftop.  Have you experienced a time when you've failed to overcome a temptation? Jill Briscoe shows us that the value of David's life story is not only that it shows man's great sin, but that it shows God's even greater forgiveness and grace.
