Ezra 7 Pt 1b

March 21, 2025

If you were with us last time you’ll remember Ezra the Scribe has returned to Jerusalem. The temple has been rebuilt and worship has been reestablished. It’s a new beginning - and good one - but something happened that could jeopardize their success.  And they needed to be on guard.

A Study in the Book of Ruth

The book of Ruth is more than just a God ordained love story, although it is certainly that as well.  It reveals the extent of God’s kindness and grace. He accepted Ruth, once an outcast, into his chosen people, and went on to  honor her by  allowing King David and Jesus to be born of her lineage.  Pastor Thom explores the life of Ruth in his 13 message series entitled, Experience Hope in the Life of Ruth.  Request your copy today, on USB flash drive or CD, for a gift  of $25 or more.

Today we continue making our way through the Old Testament book of Ezra. It’s an important book as it records the successful rebuilding of the Temple and the reestablishing of worship in Jerusalem. But some other things devolved because they didn’t practice what they preached. So we don’t make the same mistake - let’s join pastor Thom in Ezra chapter seven.

Right now we’re going through the Old Testament book of Ezra.  And as we do we’ll see the important relationship between having God’s favor and recognizing His leading. We’ll start off in Ezra chapter six  with pastor Thom explaining how God used unbelieving kings to fund the rebuilding of the temple. It’s not only an answer to prayer but an evidence of God’s favor.

As we continue today in the book of Ezra  we’ll hear of how God in His providence gives favor to His people to accomplish His purposes. He moves a Persian King named Cyrus to issue a decree to rebuild the temple. This historical account revealing the sovereignty of God is a fascinating one that’s well documented.

We continue today in the Old Testament book of Ezra. If you were with us last time you remember the enemies of God’s people have been successful in stopping the work of the temple. But that’s about to change. There will be a fair hearing of the truth.

Our teacher is Pastor Thom Keller, and we are in chapter thirteen of the Gospel of John. Today, Jesus gives His disciples a new commandment… “Even as I have loved you, you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples.”  Pastor Thom offers some insightful teaching on how to fulfill this commandment in our lives.

It’s not long after becoming a Christian before you discover the enemy of the truth has a strategy to undermine our calling. He will seek to bring confusion and undermine the truth. How does he go about implementing his devious plan? You’ll find the answer in Ezra chapter four.

We all have expectations, but are they helping or hurting?  Today’s Study The Word will lead us to the sort of expectations we’re to have and steer clear of the wrong ones. Our teacher pastor Thom Keller is in the Old Testament book of Ezra. We join him in chapter three - with an expectation that’s based in tradition but not in Scripture.

Today we continue in the Old Testament book of Ezra with pastor Thom Keller. And it’s rich with form and tradition. Of course that’s not bad as long as we remember what it all points to.

We're in the book of Ezra. And we’ll see an Old Testament picture of an important New Testament truth. We have an eye on chapter two, and it contains the historical account of the priests and the Levites returning to Jerusalem from Babylon. It’s telling and will help us evaluate our motivations.

About Study the Word

Study the Word is a radio ministry of Calvary Chapel Lebanon, Pennsylvania. It features the teaching ministry of pastor Thom Keller.  As we go verse by verse through the Scriptures, our hearts desire is to encourage you to not only Study the Word, but seek to follow God and obey His Word.

About Pastor Thom Keller

Thom began teaching an inner-city Bible study in 1995. That love of teaching God’s word eventually led to the formation of Calvary Chapel Lebanon in October, 2001, with about 50 people meeting in an old hardware store. Our church ministry and philosophy centers on teaching God’s word chapter by chapter, verse by verse.

Prior to pastoring, Thom was president and general manager of Keller Brothers Ford, a third-generation family business that began in 1921.  After 8 years of bi-vocational ministry, in 2009, Thom sold the business and became a full-time pastor.

Thom and his wife, Sue, live near Schaefferstown. Thom and Sue enjoy snow skiing, mountain biking and motorcycle rides.  Thom has often said that he loves performing weddings because he loves being married!

Ted, pictured above is Sue’s brother who has lived with Thom and Sue since 2001.

“It has been an absolute joy to see the changes God is bringing about in the lives of individuals, marriages and families at Calvary Chapel. God’s word does not return void!”

Currently we have worship services Sunday morning at 8:00 AM, 9:30 AM and 11:00 AM at our church located at 740 Willow St.  Please introduce yourself when you stop by!
