To Reject the Holy Spirit's Work Part 2

September 24, 2024

When someone invites us over for dinner, there are some common courtesies that we generally abide by.  Maybe we’re asked to take off our shoes before entering so we do, and we don’t just open their fridge and have at it, we politely ask them first.  Today on Sound Doctrine we turn to Matthew chapter 22, where we learn that we’ve been invited to the greatest feast of all time.  But you can’t come your own way, you must come God’s way.

We receive invitations all the time.  Whether it be to go out to dinner with friends or something a little more formal like to a wedding.  And generally speaking we give it some thought as to whether we’ll accept or not.  Today on Sound Doctrine we’ll hear an invitation go out from God Himself, and it’s the most important of all.  Question is, will you accept or reject it?  We join pastor Jeff Johnson now in Matthew chapter 22 for part one of, “To Reject the Holy Spirit’s Work.”

We’re in First John chapter four today focusing on a beautiful truth.  As Christians we have God almighty dwelling within us!  We can travel through life confidently knowing that no matter what comes our way, we have the Spirit of God helping, sustaining and guiding us.

When it comes right down to it, unbelief is a thief.  And the enemy uses it.  Today we’ll hear one of Jesus’ parables and reveals the evil of unbelief, as well as the result!

In Matthew chapter 21 Jesus has just been confronted by the spiritual leadership of His day.  In doing so they revealed their unbelief.  And today we’ll go on to see the result of that unbelief.

Pastor Jeff Johnson is leading a study of Matthew, and we’re back in chapter 21 today.  In response to the religious leaders unbelief, Jesus is about to give a parable of two sons. It speaks powerfully about responsibility and accountability, with the goal of winning them over!  You’ll see why these leaders needed a change of heart, just like we do, if salvation is to become a reality.

Right on the heels of cleansing the Temple, today on Sound Doctrine we find Jesus teaching in the Temple. It’s here in Matthew chapter 21 that the Chief Priests and Elders call into question the authority of Jesus.  And Jesus masterfully responds with a question of His own that would leave them flustered.

In Matthew chapter 21 Jesus curses a fig tree.  He tells the tree it will never bear fruit again, and it immediately withered!  Today on Sound Doctrine we’ll draw practical application from this, and learn that each of us are like fig trees.  God is looking for fruit in our lives that pleases Him. Is your life fruitful or fruitless?  Let’s carefully consider that together.

We’re reminded of it often around Christmas time, “The Virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel.  Which means, "God with us!”   Today on Sound Doctrine we’re reminded that God is not only with us, but He also lives in us as believers in Christ.

As we open Matthew chapter 21 today we encounter some powerful lessons…  One of them involving a withering fig tree.  While application could be made to the religious system and nation of Israel, we’ll also take a look in the mirror.

Today we revisit Matthew chapter 21, verses 12-16, where Jesus cleared the Temple.  We learned last time that the religious leaders were ripping people off from their life savings, blocking access to God, in the Temple.  Jesus was very upset about it.  But could the same sort of thing be going on today?
