Past Episodes

Today we make our way over to Acts chapter eight and receive a classic example of what’s been called a divine appointment. Philip is directed by the Lord to a man who was serious about searching for God and just happened to be reading the Scripture but needed someone to help him understand it. What a set up!

Philip was a godly man, and used greatly to put it mildly.  He was faithful to proclaim the truth of God and we’ll be encouraged to do the same.  Today we contrast his life with someone far different, a man named Simon. He was a sorcerer and a deceiver.

Today on Sound Doctrine we’ll see an example of this in the story of a man who claimed he was someone great. Acts chapter eight tells of this man Simon who was baptized by Philip but then he sought to buy the power of the Holy Spirit from the apostle Peter. There’s a difference between professing faith and possessing faith.

On Today’s broadcast we’ll be introduced to a man who never got past the signs he saw to what they pointed to. It seems that many today are just like Simon - they’re more interested in having supernatural experiences than a relationship with the God of the universe. Wanting only what’s on he master’s table but not the master.

Is man's way ever the right way? Maybe on occasion, but whe we compare our way of doing things with God's way, God's way is always the way tp go. That's what pastor Jeff Johnson will point out in today's message from Acts chapter one.

As we continue our look at Acts chapter eight today, we are reminded of the fact that God can change anyone’s life - no matter how bad they’ve been. Saul of Tarsus is a perfect example of this. He was a persecuted of Christians. He mocked them, tortured them and found great delight in their pain. Then he encountered the very God he was mocking, and his life changed completely.

In Acts chapter eight we find the Church expanding after the death of Stephen. It’s in the eighth chapter of Acts that we meet one of the most significant men in the bible - a man named Saul. When you consider that after his conversion to Christianity he wrote a significant amount of the New Testament, it is striking to see the terrible man he was prior to his conversion.

We all want a smooth existence, but that just isn’t always the case. As we wrap up our study of Acts chapter seven today, we see again that It was a tumultuous time. The Christian Church was in its infancy, and the status quo was being threatened. Let’s join pastor Jeff for our final look at Acts chapter seven.

Today we’ll be looking at the seventh chapter of Acts, where we’re given the story of Stephen, the first Christian martyr.  Not only will we hear his defense to the charge of blasphemy, but we’ll also see the fulfillment of a promise to those who believe in the Lord.

Steven’s defense in Acts chapter seven is comprised of a good deal of “case law” from the Old Testament, and offers us a refresher course on some of the great men of the Bible.   Pastor Jeff joins us in Acts seven.
