Pressure will either make you better or worse. There is no inbetween. It is through pressure that we are shown what we are made of, what comes out of our hearts, mouths, and minds. The old adage don’t judge a book by its cover was never more true than when the religious leaders profiled Peter and John. Seeing only simple fishermen, they attempted to strong arm them with their stifling legalism. Today we continue to look at the three mistakes they made in their assumptions and we discover that they asked they underestimated what God was doing, which caused them to ask the wrong questions to the disciples. Pastor Jeff shows when a godly person has convictions, God is able to use that person greatly. The difference between recognizing that Jesus Christ is alive today and only reading about Jesus in the Bible is by spending time with Him daily. As we delve into the nuggets and treasures of God’s Word we will become more like Jesus Christ and He will be seen in and through our lives. As Pastor Jeff reminds us that was the key for Mary instead of Martha, it was the key for the early church as they were standing before their persecutors. If others are going to see Jesus at work in us, then we too must have daily time with the Lord as well. Jesus is the only way to salvation. There is no other person, no other activity, and no other thing that can bring salvation. Yet throughout history mankind has continued to devise arguments, erroneous logic, and evasive ways to dodge the issue of salvation. As Pastor Jeff shows in our text today, it is God’s Spirit is convincing the world and bringing people to a recognition that they need Jesus. Why is it that so many believers, having been baptized in the Holy Spirit, after a time seem to experience a recession of the power, the love, and the witness they once enjoyed? What is the secret to maintaining that dynamic element given by God’s Spirit upon us? Fire is unique, it purifies, it consumes. And whatever fire touches becomes aflame itself. IOW fire spreads. As we continue to look at how Peter and John were able to be a witness during their time, Pastor Jeff points to the two fires: The fire of the baptism of the Holy Spirit that fueled Peter as he shared, and then Peter found himself in the fire of persecution. Pastor Jeff reminds us that persecution from man oftentimes follows the exercise of the power of God. The Bible says that God has chosen the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. As we read through the pages of Scripture we see many examples where God has done just that. Moses couldn’t speak well, Gideon was afraid...and then we come to Peter in the book of Acts. For one who was notorious among the disciples for being impulsive and brash, Peter was used to share the Gospel in the name of Jesus. And Pastor Jeff shows us how God can use us with all our shortcomings as well. Religion versus a relationship with Jesus Christ have always stood in juxtaposition. Being religious doesn’t offer salvation through Jesus Christ. It is the epitome of self-effort in the guise of holiness. As Peter and John addressed the crowd in Acts, our study reveals 4 different groups of people and their reaction to the Gospel and a relationship with Jesus Christ. Psalm 138:2 says that God has magnified His Word above all His name. And the Word says that man doesn’t live on bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. And while most believers know that we need to be in the Word and obey the Word, Pastor Jeff shows that these two essential habits of each believer prove to be the most challenging, and rewarding when they are practiced. There is a classic song that says, “I don’t want to be and old wine skin filled with yesterday’s old wine. Lord stretch me and fill me with today’s new wine.” It’s an apt description of what the church needs today, a spiritual freshness and fullness to live the life He has called us to live for Him in these last days. Pastor Jeff reminds us as the church to make sure that we don’t neglect or try to substitute God’s spirit with carnality. As we continue in Peter’s sermon in Acts 3, we hear a prophetic caution from Pastor Jeff to take these truths to heart.
