The Fate of the Fruitless Fig Tree Part 2

September 16, 2024

In Matthew chapter 21 Jesus curses a fig tree.  He tells the tree it will never bear fruit again, and it immediately withered!  Today on Sound Doctrine we’ll draw practical application from this, and learn that each of us are like fig trees.  God is looking for fruit in our lives that pleases Him. Is your life fruitful or fruitless?  Let’s carefully consider that together.

We’re reminded of it often around Christmas time, “The Virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel.  Which means, "God with us!”   Today on Sound Doctrine we’re reminded that God is not only with us, but He also lives in us as believers in Christ.

As we open Matthew chapter 21 today we encounter some powerful lessons…  One of them involving a withering fig tree.  While application could be made to the religious system and nation of Israel, we’ll also take a look in the mirror.

Today we revisit Matthew chapter 21, verses 12-16, where Jesus cleared the Temple.  We learned last time that the religious leaders were ripping people off from their life savings, blocking access to God, in the Temple.  Jesus was very upset about it.  But could the same sort of thing be going on today?

When you think of Jesus, perhaps pictures of Him being meek and mild, gentle and loving flash through your mind? But did you realize there were times in His earthly ministry that He was very upset?  Today on Sound Doctrine you’ll hear of something going on in the Temple that upset Jesus so much that He turned over some tables.   Through it all we’ll uncover what the real purpose of the House of God is.

Some wonder, “Why study Bible prophecy?”  Today on Sound Doctrine we’ll see what happens when we don’t study prophecy!  In Matthew chapter 21 Jesus rides into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey, fulfilling prophecy.  But many didn’t understand this is the day, because they weren’t students of bible prophecy.  Still today, even Christians, are avoiding it but they’re missing out!

Pastor Jeff Johnson is leading a study of Matthew’s gospel right now, and we enter a new chapter today, and a turning point in the Lord’s ministry.  Jesus is about to enter into Jerusalem on a donkey as King and Messiah.   Why a donkey you may ask?  Jeff has observed three very good reasons, and one of them being, it was to fulfill prophecy.

We dive back into First John chapter four with pastor Jeff Johnson this weekend.  God loves us more than words can tell, and now He calls us as His followers to love one another as He has loved us!  Sounds like a tall order, but realize He also empowers us to do this.  We’re simply to be a conduit of His love, allowing it to flow in and through our lives.

We’ll be finishing up Matthew chapter twenty today with pastor Jeff Johnson.  Jesus is about to give sight to two blind men. But as you’ll soon see it speaks volumes to us today!

You may have heard the expression, “Desperate times call for desperate measures!”   A case could be made that these are desperate times and so we should be desperate for God!  Again we’re in Matthew chapter twenty where Jesus gives two desperate blind men their sight.  The lessons that flow from it are huge.

As we head back to Matthew chapter twenty let me set the scene for you.  A mother is about to approach Jesus asking that her boys be given high ranking positions in the Kingdom.  While that ruffled a few feathers, how Jesus responds is brilliant, and gives us some clues about the keys to greatness in God’s eyes.   Here’s a hint, it’s connected to serving!
