Sin Dealt With = Victory Part 3

January 13, 2022

You’ve no doubt heard some of the accusations leveled against God. Criticisms of God because He doesn’t do something about the evil in the world, and then when He does, well they criticize that too. But you can’t have it both ways. Nor should you want to, and for good reason as we’ll explore on today’s Sound Doctrine with pastor Jeff Johnson.

We’ll find that in the book of Joshua chapter eight.  We’re going to gain some effective strategies for spiritual warfare, like prayer, patience and simple obedience.

One of the often-overlooked consequences of sin is the discouragement that sets in from the failure. But there are promises to be claimed for the disheartened believer, like forgiveness and restoration when there’s repentance.  And we’ll hear of a case in point on today’s Sound Doctrine with pastor Jeff Johnson. It’s found in the book of Joshua chapter eight.

It’s said, the three hardest words are, “I am wrong.” It’s an indication of why it’s so hard but so necessary to confess. And on today’s Sound Doctrine we’ll gain insight on this struggle through the story of Achan.  You’ll find it in Joshua chapter seven.  And we learn among other things that it’s better to come clean because you can’t hide from God.

It’s no secret that Christians in the past faced suffering and persecution. They certainly did in Peter’s day!  The first century Roman world was hostile to Christianity to put it mildly.  And we face it today in case you haven’t noticed.  We can count on the enemy coming against us.  So How should we respond?  First Peter chapter three answers that for us.

Those of you who are old enough to remember the Wide World of Sports no doubt recall this line, “The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat!”   That could also be the headliner for Joshua chapters six and seven.  Right on the heels of the victory at Jericho, came a terrible defeat.  We’ll see what happened, and how we can avoid a spiritual defeat as well.

It’s after we’ve experienced a great victory that we need to be on our guard, as we could so easily experience a spiritual defeat like the people we’ll meet up with today.  How can we avoid defeat?  That’s the question of the day here on Sound Doctrine.  Pastor Jeff Johnson will draw attention to Israel’s defeat in Joshua chapter six, and the reasons for it.

How are your finances?  Perhaps like some you’ve lost your job, or with inflation you’re pinching pennies like never before.  Whether we’re living in prosperity, or things are tight, we’re to be givers.  And today on Sound Doctrine we’ll see that God stands ready to bless the obedient giver.

We’ve just entered into a New Year, and many of us are putting together our family budget for 2022.  So how are you spending your money?  We’ll thoughtfully consider that today on Sound Doctrine as we take you to Joshua chapter six.  You’ll remember God has just given the city of Jericho to Joshua.  But as we’ll see today, the Lord wants him to give it to the Lord.

With inflation the way it is, and the cost of goods and services going through the roof, many of us are feeling the pinch in our pocketbook.  As a result you may feel right now that you can’t afford to give.  But today on Sound Doctrine, we’ll learn we can’t afford not to give.

We’re in the middle of a study in First Peter.  The believer is no stranger to suffering, especially in recent months.  But God never promised this life would be easy for us.  However, there’s a comforting promise you can cling to at such times, and it’s this: God’s eyes are on us, and His ears are open to our prayers.  Be encouraged by that now, as we join pastor Jeff in chapter three, at verses 10-13.
