Today, in Acts chapter nine, the Lord has appeared to Saul. In an abrupt change of events Saul is no longer the persecutor of Christians but now proclaiming that Jesus is the Son of God. It is a huge change of direction for Saul’s life. The change was dramatic. And as Saul continued to grow in the Lord, his preaching became more powerful.

As you look at your life, and consider all that you’ve said and done, you might think there’s no possible way God would accept you much less use you! Well, the good news is, He will lovingly embrace you and will use you. He loves to reconcile people to Himself. Today we’re going to jump right back into our study of the book of Acts. There are many landmark events described in the Bible. But the one we’ll look at today was significant in many way. In the ninth chapter of Acts, the conversion of Saul takes place. It’s because of this one event that a significant portion of the New Testament was written.

Philip is directed by the Lord to a man who was serious about searching for God and just happened to be reading the Scripture but needed someone to help him understand it. What a set up!

Philip was a godly man, and used greatly to put it mildly. He was faithful to proclaim the truth of God and we’ll be encouraged to do the same. Today we contrast his life with someone far different, a man named Simon. He was a sorcerer and a deceiver.

Today on Sound Doctrine we’ll see an example of this in the story of a man who claimed he was someone great. Acts chapter eight tells of this man Simon who was baptized by Philip but then he sought to buy the power of the Holy Spirit from the apostle Peter. There’s a difference between professing faith and possessing faith.
