More in 2004 Part 2

December 9, 2024

We started the journey through Matthew’s gospel back in January, and today on Sound Doctrine we wrap it up.  Soon we’ll be welcoming in a new year, and what you’re about to hear is God’s plan for this next year.  Pastor Jeff Johnson refers to it as the “Go and Lo” plan!  We’ll explain what that’s all about today.

References: Matthew 28:11-20

Past Episodes

Today pastor Jeff Johnson pays a visit to First John chapter five where we read about a sin unto death!  It’s quite possible that this is referring to physical death, rather than spiritual.  An example in Scripture that comes to mind is Ananias and Sapphira, when they lied to the Holy Spirit, and were taken out!  We’ll talk about this and more on this insightful edition of Sound Doctrine.

We’ll be finishing up the gospel of Matthew today on Monday, with an eye on chapter 28 verses 11-20.  Remember Jesus has just been crucified, and buried in a tomb.  But as we’ll hear today, that tomb is now empty!  What happened to the body?  No doubt a question in the minds of many in that day, and even still today!  Jesus would leave no doubt in anyone’s mind, as He would appear to hundreds of people post resurrection!  Proving He is very much alive.

As we’ve studied Matthew over the past few days, we’ve seen the pain and humiliation Jesus experienced on the cross.  The good news is that no crucifixion, no spear in His side, no burial in a tomb could defeat Him! He is risen! Because He lives, we can too.  That’s the theme of Matthew chapter twenty-eight.

Don’t you love this time of the year as we collectively remember the birth of Christ.  But what many fail to recognize is that Jesus was born to die.  And so here recently we’ve been talking about the death and crucifixion of our Lord and all that it means to us.  But we’ll also think for a bit about our own mortality!  One day, we too will die.  But it’s not something we need to fear, if our faith is in Christ.

Someone has said there are only two sure things in life… death and taxes.  But as we’ll see today on Sound Doctrine, Jesus and His Word are a sure thing that you can count on!  Pastor Jeff Johnson will be finishing Matthew chapter 27.  Jesus has just been crucified, and placed in a tomb.  That tomb would be sealed with guards around it, as they were trying to prevent anyone from stealing the body. But as we know, Jesus didn’t stay in that tomb. He rose from the grave, offering life to as many as would receive Him.

As you look around it may seem as though there are no sure things in life.  But as we’ll discover today on Sound Doctrine there are some things we can count on with absolute certainty!  For starters, If you’re a Christian you have eternal life.  And every Word we find in the Bible is true!  We’ll spend some time reflecting on all that this means to us today, in a world full of uncertainties.

When you encounter a child you haven’t seen in years so often the first thought that runs through our mind is, “Boy have they grown!”  The same should be said of a Christian, when compared to their life before they met Christ!  We should be growing in Christlikeness, not practicing sin.  Today on Sound Doctrine we take you to First John chapter five for part two of pastor Jeff Johnson’s message, “Practicing Sin!”

In recent days we’ve been learning about the crucifixion of Jesus.  And as we’ll hear today He would then be buried in a tomb!  But He wouldn’t stay there for long, as Jesus would be raised to new life offering life to as many who would receive Him as Savior and Lord.

There are many things we have to be thankful for, but right there at the top of the list has to be our Savior, who died on a Roman cross, for our sins.  And today we’ll reflect on the cross and all that it means to us, viewing it through the eyes of the many witnesses that day. Including the women that ministered to Jesus, and a Roman guard!

Pastor Jeff Johnson is leading a study of Matthew’s gospel and we’ve been taking our time here in chapter 27.  As this chapter tells us all about the crucifixion of Jesus.  The answer to sin, suffering and silence is right here at the cross.  So to say it's important would be an understatement!  But we also find well over 300 prophecies fulfilled at the cross.
