Imagine you are sharing Christ with someone who’s interested in what you have to say, then all of a sudden another person interrupts and opposes you!  Well that’s exactly what happened to the apostle Paul, as we’ll hear today on Sound Doctrine. In Acts thirteen, this disruption came from a sorcerer.  Which leads us to ask, is it ever a good idea to go to a medium or psychic?

Today, we’ll be in Acts chapter thirteen if you want to find your place there now. God has just put together a missionary team. headed by Paul, to go into all the world and preach the gospel.  While they would have a helper in the Holy Spirit, there was also great opposition.

As we delve further into chapter thirteen, we’re following Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey.  You might think of this chapter as a journal of their fascinating trip. God may or may not call us to leave our home and go to a foreign land, but we’re still to be a missionary wherever we may be.  And like these saints of old, God wants to prepare and empower us to succeed.

As we dive deeper into chapter thirteen today, we’re witness to Paul and Barnabas as they embark on their first missionary journey. Can you imagine what it was like for Luke to witness this journey and write it all down for us? In these verses we get a good idea of how the Holy Spirit works in our lives today, even in ways we might not expect.

Acts chapter thirteen describes the work of the Holy Spirit.  We’re told He has come to guide and teach us… often through gifted individuals.  Pastor Jeff Johnson is going to give attention specifically to the gifts of prophecy and teaching and how it’s to be exercised… as well as received.

One of the greatest things about the Bible is the way that the accounts of these men and women translate so well into modern times. God’s Word is living and active and applies to every person on earth. Today Pastor Jeff Johnson takes us to the Apostle Paul’s first missionary journey. As we watch and learn of this great man’s maturing in Christ, let’s see if we can find some ways we might grow closer to the Lord as well.

When you think of power, you might think of a person, like the President - generally regarded as the most powerful person on earth. You might think of a machine, like a NASCAR race car, which can go over 200 miles per hour. But no machine or person can compare with the power we’ll discuss today, the power of prayer. As we reach the end of Acts twelve, we will see the end of Herod and the power of prayer!

The scene we continue to look at today in Acts chapter twelve would make a good mini-series. We have Peter in jail, released miraculously. We have Rhoda, trying to explain to Peter’s pals that he is indeed at the front door. We have Herod... well, Herod is just a mess. All in all it makes for a great time of study in God’s word.

Many people think that the day they receive salvation through Jesus Christ is the day all of their problems disappear. That’s hardly the case! But we certainly can get help in times of trouble from God! The key component that Pastor Jeff has been talking about is Prayer!
