The Bible tells us that we were created for God and we exist by His will. As we live lives that please and glorify God, that fulfills His purpose for our lives. As Pastor Jeff Johnson is showing us Paul’s prayer of encouragement, this final prayer request for God to be glorified in the lives of the church of Thessalonica as they went through persecution as they went through their trials. It’s important to the Lord to see how we glorify Him when things go well, as well as when we face trials and persecutions. Trials don’t make a person, but they reveal what is in that person when they come along. Pastor Jeff Johnson shows through the church in Thessalonica that through hardships the heart is revealed. And as we come along the trials that we face, we need to ask the Lord to build up our worth as we experience those hardships. While we don’t like the trials that we experience, we can face them head on, knowing that God has a plan in it to refine us so that our faith will come out to praise, honor, and glory when Jesus Christ is revealed to this world. As believers we are called to continue to persevere in what God has called us to. And as they continued to demonstrate their worthiness by the endurance of trials they experienced, they were encouraged by Paul the apostle. Pastor Jeff Johnson reminds us that the Lord gives peace and rest and ultimately in the future offers a total rest for His people. While we don’t rush into trials, God has given us one who experienced suffering and trials that exceed anything we will experience in Jesus’ life. Pastor Jeff says that we can have confidence that Jesus will never leave us nor forsake us in our desperate and dark hours because He Himself experienced darkness in the Garden of Gethsemane and at the cross. Paul the apostle testified that the life and power of Jesus is present in his life, even while the sufferings and trials were trying to pull him down. When it comes to trials no one usually rushes into them. But when they do come, our response to them is telling. As we look at the way in which the church in Thessalonica handled their circumstances, we notice how Paul commends their patience and endurance through trials of persecution. Pastor Jeff reminds us that God wants to actively work through the trials that we experience as well, if we will allow Him. And as the enemy seeks to weaken us through our trials, we are reminded that we need to run to the Lord and He will work on our behalf. It begins with the words, “Our Father in heaven…” and thus began the recognition that we could call upon Almighty God as close as our very own personal parent. On January 29th 1886, man invented the power of the combusion engine. On November 1, 1952, the world learned the power of the first hydrogen bomb. But it’s been over 2,000 years and God’s people still haven’t grasped the power of God’s word. As Pastor Jeff Johnson finishes our time in the book of 1 Thessalonians we discover Paul’s view of God’s Word as a necessary component for God’s people to be read to the church.
