Idolatry isn’t just a thing of the past, but it’s a present reality in many lives. While we may not be setting up wooden images on our mantel, the idols in our lives may take the form of money, sex or pleasure seeking. Let’s be encouraged to embrace the real thing, Jesus Christ!

We all face decisions or situations, big and small, every day! But do you try to figure it out on your own, in your strength? A much better way to go is to look to the Lord in prayer, and wait upon God, drawing on His power. Today we’ll join pastor Jeff in Acts chapter one, where a case could be made that the early church leaders are trying to solve a problem man’s way instead of God’s way. They were limiting God. Let’s make sure we’re not guilty of the very same thing.

We’re just getting started in Acts with pastor Jeff Johnson. At the tail-end of chapter one the apostles are wondering how they would deal with the loss of Judas and fill this 12th spot! They prayed and knew the Word, but they did not have the power and anointing of God! That can easily happen to us if we’re not careful.

Whether it’s in the doctor’s office or in traffic, we typically don’t like to wait! We grow impatient if we have to wait for something for 10 minutes! Today we turn to the book of Acts and the disciples are in a ten day period where they were to wait and pray! Will they go God’s way, or man’s way? We’re about to find out! But let’s also consider how we’re serving the Lord. Are we doing our own thing, going by our own program? Or are we relying on the power of God and looking to Him?

Last time on Sound Doctrine we learned all about the ascension of Jesus that the disciples witnessed. While Jesus was taken away, He promised He would return. And that we can count on! But what are we to be doing in the meantime? We’ll talk about that here today, as pastor Jeff Johnson opens Acts chapter one. In short we’re to occupy until He comes and to be a witness for the Lord, with eyes on Him.

We’re in the early stages of a study in Acts, and today we make a return visit to chapter one. Pastor Jeff Johnson will hone in on the ascension of Jesus, and the last message the Lord left with His disciples. To say it’s important would be an understatement. Yes Jesus would leave them, but He will return! And that brings wonderful hope to our hearts.

Today we’re at the tail-end of First John chapter five. It’s interesting that John would end the letter encouraging the reader to keep themselves from idols! We’ll learn today that these idols are lifeless, useless substitutes for the real thing. And Jesus is the real thing, the true and living God. So why settle for anything less!

Today we’ll see the great need for Christians to plug into their power source, the Holy Spirit. It’s often referred to as the baptism of the Holy Spirit, not to be confused with other baptisms.

There are many wonderous events occurring in this book - from the giving of the Holy Spirit, the ascension of Christ, to the many adventures of the Apostle Paul.
