A Good Minister, Preaches Good Doctrine
If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed.
1 Timothy 4:6
Timothy needed to continue having the marks of a good minister. Paul wanted to make sure that Timothy understood the importance of a biblical, teaching ministry––a ministry that is based upon God’s Word. A church grounded in God’s Word can be used greatly to reach the lost. The brethren in the church needed to be reminded of these things.
I advise that you really need to be careful with what you listen to on radio and TV. Examine everything that is taught to you. Is it in the Bible? Can you find it in the Gospels? Did Jesus teach it? Is it in the epistles? Do not get comfortable and get used to kicking back and accepting everything that is said to you, even from the pulpit.
I always encourage those in the congregation to not only listen to what I am teaching from the pulpit, but to check everything that is being taught. Make sure you are comparing it with what is written in the Bible. Do not just take my word for it. That is why it is important to bring your Bible to church. Review the message by checking and reading the passages for yourself. Always make sure the teaching is biblical.
Calvary Chapel Ministries are well known for their teaching. They teach line upon line––book by book, chapter by chapter, and verse by verse. This way we do not deviate from teaching the full counsel of God. A pastor will teach the Old Testament, as well as the New Testament. There is no room for twisting God’s Word; it interprets itself.
Who is a good minister? He is not someone who is known for the way he dresses, or the kind of car he drives, or the charisma that he possesses. He is a minister who teaches the Word of God in its entirety, constantly and repetitiously. He teaches healthy doctrine––the Cross of Christ and His salvation. Are you attending a biblical, teaching church?
Do not go where it is all fine music and grand talk and beautiful architecture; go where the gospel is preached and go often.
