The Pillar and Ground of Truth

These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory.
1 Timothy 3:14-16

We can tell that Paul wanted to visit Timothy, to see how the church was succeeding. Remember, Timothy was in the city of Ephesus where the goddess Diana’s temple stood. The temple was built with 127 pillars that were 60 feet high and were made out of beautiful marble and gold! In this idolatrous and corrupt society, Christians needed to learn how to conduct their lives differently.

Paul wrote to Timothy so that he knew how to behave in the house of God. His instructions equipped the young minister to be an example and to teach the believers in Ephesus how to act in the house of God.

Scripturally, where is the house of God? In the Old Testament, the house of God was a Temple; but literally, we became the temple of the Holy Spirit––the house of God. The Holy Spirit dwells within us:

Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are (1 Corinthians 3:16-17).

The Church belongs to the living God. Its doctrine is a pillar and ground of truth. Paul declares the nature of this truth given to us––God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory.

Are you able to be a pillar to the church? You become a pillar when you are grounded in the truth of God. Be a pillar, not a problem in the Church. Know God’s Word and live it in your everyday life.

Nobody can do as much damage to the church of God as the man who is within its walls, but not within its life.
