A Good Standing in Ministry
Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 3:12-13
A deacon serving in the church has to take the rulership of his home. The husband and the wife are to be united together. Their children are to be in submission to their mother and father. Leaders in the church have been disqualified because their homes were not in order. The husband is not loving his wife, and he is allowing his children to be in rebellion without giving them any disciplinary action.
As a father and a leader in the church, spend time with your wife and nurture your children. They can become bitter in ministry if you neglect them. Children need a father’s interaction. They want love and attention. Give them the love of Christ and pour into their young lives. Let them see your servanthood in the home and at church. They will follow your example and become the next generation of church leadership.
Notice, deacons who serve well have obtained a good standing, both in the church and outside of the church. This means people see the same man at home and in the church. This reputation earns them respect. It also enables them to have great boldness in the faith. They can proclaim Christ’s Gospel in blamelessness. I like that.
If the Lord has called you to serve, to be a deacon, first make sure your home is in order; seek Him in prayer and wait on the Lord to open the door. God is the One who promotes a person: For exaltation comes neither from the east nor from the west nor from the south. But God is the Judge: He puts down one, and exalts another (Psalm 75:6-7). When God places a call on your life, He will give you the opportunity to fulfill that call.
It’s not the position that makes the leader; it’s the leader that makes the position.
